Location of Schandelah in Cremlingen

Schandelah is a village in Lower Saxony , 15 km east of Braunschweig . Schandelah belongs to the municipality of Cremlingen in the Wolfenbüttel district and has over 2000 residents, a train station, a kindergarten, a primary school and a sports club .

geography

The municipality is located in the transition between the North German lowlands and the central German mountainous region near the Elm . The Sandbach , which later flows into the Oker , flows through Schandelah.

Geopoint Jurameer Schandelah

Northeast of Schandelah is located in a former oil shale quarry , the marl kuhle , the Geopoint Jurassic sea Schandelah as a natural history research and experience destination. The area at Schandelah one of the few places in Lower Saxony, where the remains of the early Toarcian deposited sediments of the Jurassic sea (a side sea of Neotethys ) in fossilized form in the Posidonia shale (oil shale) of the (North German) Lias (or the North German Jura ) lie close to the surface of the earth.

Paleontological excavations have been taking place on the site of the geopoint since the late summer of 2014 , which were carried out under the scientific direction of the Natural History Museum Braunschweig in cooperation with the Braunschweig- based Dr. Scheller Foundation and the Geopark Harz - Braunschweiger Land - Ostfalen . On 4 June 2015, the Fund of the same year in May was discovered about two feet long fossil of an ichthyosaur in about 180 million year old layers of Posidonia shale given (oil shale) public. Another fossil about three meters long of an ichthyosaur in a rare supine position was found in June 2016.

The deposition of the sediments forming this Posidonia schist took place over a period of about 2.3 million to 3.2 million years, began at the earliest about 183.6 million years ago, at the latest 182.0 million years ago and ended at the earliest about 181.3 million years ago 175.7 million years ago.

Years before the previously described excavations in the Mergelkuhle, which began in 2014, an ichthyosaur fossil was found and illegally excavated in an excavation field in Schandelah.

history

Memorial stone in Schandelah

Schandelah was first mentioned in a document around 1200 as a tavern .

Schandelah initially gained importance as the seat of the "Gografschaft Schandelah im Amte Camping". In a document from 1346, Schandelah is mentioned among other places as "accessories" to the Campen Castle near Flechtorf .

In the Schandelah concentration camp , a satellite camp of the Neuengamme concentration camp in the Wohld district, oil shale was mined from May 8, 1944 to April 12, 1945 as the basis for gasoline production.

On March 1, 1974, Schandelah was incorporated into the community of Cremlingen. From 2004 to 2011, two new building areas were developed here.

politics

Local council

The local council of Schandelah consists of nine seats, five of which are occupied by the SPD and four by the CDU .

Local mayor is Ute Widow (SPD). She has been in office since the constituent meeting of the local council on November 10, 2011 and the first female mayor appointed by the SPD for 57 years.

coat of arms

The council of the municipality of Schandelah adopted the coat of arms described below on February 23, 1967, which the Braunschweig administrative president approved on August 30, 1967.

Description of coat of arms
"In the split shield in front, in a blue field sprinkled with red hearts, a left-facing red armored lion, behind a field split in gold-blue with three left points."

Anyone who is familiar with the Braunschweig territorial heraldry will immediately recognize the Lüneburgish in the lion based on the heart, although this is not to be suspected here, in the heartland of the Wolfenbüttelian parts of the Welf lands, and also, for reasons of contrast to the tips, in " wrong "colors (correct it is blue in the golden field). However, Schandelah actually belonged to the House of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and only came to the Wolfenbüttel line in 1512 when an inheritance was divided.
In the local history, the Lords of Scanlesche, who can later be found in Braunschweig, played a role. Its red shield contained three slanted silver tips.
In the Schandelaher coat of arms they reappear slightly modified and changed in color, in such a way that the main colors of the shield are blue-yellow, i.e. the Brunswick national colors.

Culture and sight

music

The place also became known through the album of the same name by the pop duo Rosenfels , whose artists both come from Schandelah.

Buildings

The Evangelical Lutheran St. George Church is located in the center of the village.

The old school Schandelah is now the seat of the cultural association.

societies

In addition to the cultural association, there are other active groups and associations in Schandelah that shape social coexistence in the village. Mention should be made of the senior circle, the dance group “Heart of Dance” and the local rifle club , which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013. All clubs hold traditional events such as Volkskönigschießen (see Schützenkönig ), torchlight parades (Schützenverein) or dance performances (Heart of Dance) and senior citizens' meetings (Altenkreis).

The MTV Schandelah celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2011.

Under the umbrella of the "United Associations", the local groups also organize joint events to further increase awareness in the village, especially among new residents.

Regular events

Schandelah is a "carnival stronghold" in the municipality of Cremlingen. The carnival celebrations and the handmade paper breakfast of the Junge Gesellschaft Schandelah eV have a long tradition. Schandelah owns his own car for the carnival parade in Braunschweig.

Companies

The company Auerswald GmbH & Co. KG , a manufacturer of telecommunications systems, maintains a production facility on site.

ELWE Lehrsysteme GmbH, a manufacturer of teaching aids for physics, chemistry and biology classes in schools, was formerly located in Schandelah.

traffic

As access to public transport, the place has a train station on the Braunschweig – Magdeburg railway line . From 1902 to 1975 the Schandelah – Oebisfelde railway branched off here .

The Schandelah train station offers, among other things, a fast connection in the direction of Braunschweig and was barrier-free until it was modernized in 2007. This is no longer the case since the renovation. Today, passengers coming from Braunschweig have to take an underpass that only has stairs. Therefore, wheelchair users coming from Braunschweig cannot leave the platform in Schandelah.

The federal motorway 39 and the federal highway 1 run south of the village .
