The Sandbach in Schandelah |
The Sandbach is a creek in Lower Saxony about 10.6 kilometers long. It rises in the Elm and flows into the Schunter from the left in Braunschweig .
geography
source
The Sandbach rises south of Abbenrode in a deeply cut valley between Kampberg and Table Mountain. It drains the northwest part of the Elm to the northwest.
course
It flows west of the place and is directed northwest. Below Abbenrode, several field streams flow into the Sandbach. It then flows through Gardessen and Schandelah . In the following agriculturally used areas, the stream is largely straightened and canalized. In Hordorf and on the Braunschweig city area equivalent to the sewage treatment plant Weddel the riverbed changes because in the context of restoration measures several tributaries and some meanders were created. After the Sandbach has passed Dibbesdorf to the south, it flows into the Schunter to the west of the village .

Water quality
The Sandbach is classified as a loess-loam-shaped lowland brook. The quality is monitored by the responsible state company NLWKN in Lower Saxony . As part of the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive , the NLWKN has created a water body data sheet that records the Sandbach. There, both the ecological status and the ecological potential are rated as "unsatisfactory". This is due to the structural deficits that result from canal-like straightening in the middle course, as well as due to the entry of pollutants from agriculture and the Weddel sewage treatment plant.
