Holy Spirit Dove

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Holy Spirit Dove is the name of a dove carved from wood with a halo , which symbolizes the Holy Spirit . The wings and tail feathers each consist of a piece of wood cut into thin layers and then fanned out. Mostly spruce wood is used for this . Such a dove is hung in the Herrgottswinkel , above the dining table or on the occasion of the birth or baptism of a child above a cradle. This custom, widespread in Scandinavia , Northern Germany , Southern Germany and Austria , can be traced back to at least 1740.

Holy Spirit Ball

In the Bavarian Forest and Berchtesgaden , pigeons of the Holy Spirit are traditionally placed in a glass ball. Such a Holy Spirit ball is similar to the bottle of patience . Because condensation water can drip back into the steaming soup bowl from a glass ball hanging above the dining table , this type of Holy Spirit dove has also been given the joking name of soup sucker .
