St. Theresa of the Child Jesus was the Catholic Church in Cremlingen , a parish in the Wolfenbüttel district in Lower Saxony . As a branch church, it belonged to the parish of the Holy Cross , based in Veltheim , in the Braunschweig deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church named after St. Therese von Lisieux was located in Hauptstrasse 2A (corner of Bohmwiese). Today St. Bonifatius is the closest Catholic church in Weddel, about 4 kilometers away.

history

As a result of the Second World War , the number of Catholics in the area around Braunschweig, which has been Protestant since the Reformation, increased considerably due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire . In the post-war period, a Catholic parish was formed in Cremlingen. In 1953 the foundation stone was laid for the church, and on December 6th of the same year its benediction followed . In 1991 St. Theresia of the Child Jesus got a daughter church with St. Boniface in the Weddel district of Cremling . Around the beginning of the 1990s the church was renovated, including removing the confessional and installing a new heater.

From November 1st, 2006 the church belonged to the parish Heilig Kreuz in Veltheim (Ohe). The parish of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus , which last had about 1100 members, was dissolved in this context.

On February 15, 2014, the church was profaned by Vicar General Werner Schreer . The church building was sold and is to be used by a sculptor as a living and exhibition space in the future. The statue of St. Therese von Lisieux found a new place in the Weddeler St. Bonifatius Church, the rectory and parsonage in Cremlingen will be preserved for the parish. The bell was given away to the Protestant St. Lambertus Church in Brück , named after Michael Stifel and hung up again in 2015 in the bell tower of St. Lambertus Church. In the meantime (2013) there was also discussion about raising the Church of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus to a parish church and instead profaning the Church of the Holy Cross in Veltheim. However, this was not realized.

Architecture and equipment

Interior view (2014)

The church was built according to plans by the Brunswick architect Friedrich, at a height of around 110 meters above sea level , designed as a long house with a roof turret . There was a weathercock on the top of the ridge, and a bronze bell, cast in 1953, hung in the ridge. The church had 84 seats, to the left and right of the chancel there were statues of Saints Maria and Therese of Lisieux. The tabernacle was on a stele in the sanctuary, and a crucifix hung on the back wall of the sanctuary . A representation on the front of the altar showed Jesus with the disciples of Emmaus . The church's equipment also included six stations of the cross and an electronic organ . The lights in the church were made by the Rothkegel lamp manufacturer in Würzburg. About 150 meters away, at Hauptstrasse 14, is the rectory, built in 1964, with the rectory behind it.
