Holy Cross Weilburg

The listed Catholic Holy Cross Church in Weilburg in central Hesse was built in 1958 and 1959. The consecration took place on May 24, 1959 by the Limburg bishop Wilhelm Kempf .

history

A Christian community was mentioned for the first time in 912 in a document from King Konrad I , who gave property in the Lahngau to the Walpurgis Abbey in Weilburg, which was built in honor of the Holy Mother of God, Maria . Since the Nassau dynasty joined the Reformation early on , the monastery was dissolved.

When the construction of the stone bridge over the Lahn began in 1768, many Catholic craftsmen came to the city for this reason. At their request, the prince gave them permission to read mass on Sundays and public holidays in a room in the cattle yard next to the riding school.

In 1813 a parish administrator, Father Damus Huberti, came to Weilburg; the first pastor, Franz Anton Hisgen, was introduced in 1817. Prince Wilhelm gave the Catholic community a building that had previously been used as a penitentiary right at the Landtor. The building was consecrated as the Karlskirche to St. Karl Borromeo on November 4, 1821.

After the Second World War, the number of Catholics rose sharply due to the expellees, so that the new church was built for around 5,000 Catholics in the vicinity of the Holy Cross Chapel and the Crucifixion Group. The architect was Paul Johannbroer from Wiesbaden.

On January 1, 2019, Bishop Dr. Georg Bätzing created the new type of parish Heilig Kreuz Oberlahn from the parishes of the former pastoral area Weilburg-Mengerskirchen. The Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche Weilburg became the parish church of this new parish.

particularities
