Holy Cross Church in Hasle

In the pilgrimage church of Heiligkreuz ob Hasle in the canton of Lucerne , the mystery of the Holy Cross ( cross particles ) is venerated. The history of the pilgrimage church Heiligkreuz goes back to the late Middle Ages .

history

The legend says: The Holy Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, took place in 320, the Cross of Christ on Golgotha . She gave a piece of the wood to a soldier who miraculously brought it to Arras (northern France). In order to check the authenticity of the relic, the piece of wood was tied between the horns of a wild ox that was furious in the area - it was supposed to tame him. The ox became tame and, accompanied by a messenger, trotted through Alsace to the gate of Entlebuch. He rested in Wolhusen . He moved on to Witenbach ob Hasle. There the piece of wood (particle of the cross) was revealed to the shepherds with a "shining heavenly light and angelic music". Then a prayer house was built and the cross particles were deeply venerated.

In 1344 Johannes von Aarwangen , a Cistercian brother from the St. Urban monastery , built a chapel and a hermit house for the purpose of worshiping the cross of Christ together with fellow brothers in Witenbach, as Heiligkreuz was still called at that time. In 1469 the last hermits left. According to a document dated October 15, 1344, Duke Friedrich of Austria assured the hermits of the Witenbach farmstead by letter and placed them under the special protection of the Vogt von Wolhusen. In 1386 the patronage went to the city of Lucerne. In January 1479 Pope Sixtus IV granted the residents of Entlebuch the privilege of including the cross, the crown of thorns and nails in their national banner with the beech. The name Heiligkreuz first appeared in 1480, and today's church was built in 1588.

Architecture and equipment

Holy Cross Church

The church housed a high and two side altars . A fourth altar was in the open. Presumably a house was connected to the chapel. In 1753/1754 the pilgrimage church received its present design. Master builder Jakob Singer rebuilt the originally late Gothic chapel and added a confessional and a tower to the complex. The interior and furnishings were completely redesigned in the Rococo style. The vault was newly drawn in.

The Heiligkreuz pilgrimage church contains sacred art that goes back to the Rococo style. The high altar is characterized by the bright colors. The choir screen , the oldest game was already in 1593 used as a safety barrier. The centerpiece is the monstrance from the 16th century. It contains the cross particles. The frescoes on the walls are of art historical interest . They were uncovered during the restoration in 1976/1977.

Place of pilgrimage

Thousands have already walked the station route from Hasle to Heiligkreuz. The first records date from 1748. Today's pictures were painted in 1893 by an unknown Fraulein Fischer from Zug. Master Georg Troxler freshened up the faded pictures in 1931 and gave them his stamp. The last restoration took place in 2005 in Hanspeter Stalder's studio .

The stations accompany you from Hasle (sandy soil) up to the pilgrimage church, where the mystery of the holy cross is venerated. 14 stations of the cross lead on the old, steep mule track from the Schüpfheim parish church to the pilgrimage church. The station chapels have had new bronze reliefs since 1982.
