The monastery Dorstadt is a historic monastery in Dorstadt , Wolfenbüttel . After the secularization in 1803 it became an estate and is privately owned.

History and buildings

The monastery was a foundation of the Saxon noble family von Dorstadt . Arnold von Dorstadt, who had no heir, founded it in 1189. His relative, Bishop Adelog von Hildesheim, confirmed and privileged the establishment in the same year. The Augustinians - Pen received the patronage to Holy Cross .

After a century and a half of cultural prosperity and economic expansion, land had to be sold for the first time in 1327. In 1438, a fire destroyed large parts of the building, which resulted in lengthy and costly reconstruction. As a result of the Hildesheim collegiate feud , Dorstadt came to the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg in 1519 with large parts of the Hildesheim monastery . Since the entire duchy (after an initial phase from 1543 to 1547) changed to the Lutheran denomination in 1568 , the monastery was converted into a Protestant women's monastery.

With the restoration of the bishopric in the old borders, Dorstadt came back under the control of the Hildesheim prince-bishops in 1643. The already dilapidated buildings of the monastery burned down almost completely in 1646. Only after overcoming the worst consequences of the Thirty Years' War did Bishop Maximilian Heinrich von Bayern resettlement Dorstadt with Augustinian nuns, who in 1680 began building the new baroque ensemble of buildings, which was completed in 1720. The monastery church was also a Catholic parish church.

After the end of the Holy Roman Empire , the Dorstadt monastery was also dissolved. It came into Prussian state ownership and was sold in private hands in 1810. In 1919 the facility was hit again by fire. The church, which was almost completely destroyed, was abandoned and replaced by a new building elsewhere in 1937 . This was expanded in 1963/64 and equipped with a free-standing bell tower. Today he belongs to the parish of St. Petrus in Wolfenbüttel .

The remaining monastery buildings could be restored close to the original. The same happened after a fire in the west wing in 1947. The manor house , formerly a priory , is used by the owners, the von Löbbecke family , barons of Girsewald, as a residence. The extensive park extends behind it. The former convent building contains modern rental apartments.
