The pilgrimage church to the Kreuzberg in Haardorf

The pilgrimage church to Kreuzberg is a Romanesque church in the village of Haardorf , not far from the town of Osterhofen in the Lower Bavarian district of Deggendorf .

According to a legend, Saint Severin is said to have erected a cross here to worship Christ instead of the existing Roman Temple of Diana .

The church was built between 1259 and 1262 by Count Albert von Hals and handed over to the Order of the Premonstratensians of Osterhofen Monastery . Since the bishops Konrad V of Regensburg and Erich von Freising had given the church indulgences , a lively pilgrimage to the Holy Cross of Haardorf developed . It is reported that in 1762 alone, for the 500th anniversary of the church, 34,000 pilgrims were there.

The pilgrimage, which almost dried up in the last century, has been revived more and more since the interior restoration of the church in 1984. 2003 was the last major pilgrimage with around 800 believers together with Bishop Wilhelm Schraml of Passau.
