Exaltation of the Cross Church

The Church of the Exaltation of the Cross is a Greek Orthodox church in the Mannheim district of Luzenberg . It was built between 1965 and 1966 according to the plans of Heinz Heß as a Catholic branch church.

history

In 1853, the French company St. Gobain built a mirror factory in the Käfertaler district with a workers' settlement , the nucleus of what would later become the Waldhof , and in 1861 the so-called mirror church. From 1910 the residential development of Luzenberg was built south of it. The pastor of the Waldhöfer St. Franziskus Church was responsible for the Catholic residents . During the Second World War , the Spiegelkirche was destroyed and not rebuilt. Twenty years later, in 1965, the foundation stone was laid for a branch church in Luzenberg. It was completed the following year and consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Karl Gnädinger on June 17, 1966 in honor of Saint Martin .

Although Greeks had lived in Mannheim since at least the 19th century, their number only increased with the recruitment of guest workers from Greece , so that in 1963 a Greek Orthodox parish of the Greek Orthodox metropolis of Germany was founded. The services were celebrated in various churches until the congregation first visited the St. Martin Church in 1981. In 1987, a lease agreement was signed with the entire Catholic parish of Mannheim. The last Catholic service was celebrated in St. Martin's Church in 2005, before the Greek Orthodox congregation finally acquired the church in 2010 and renamed it “ Exaltation of the Cross in Mannheim”.

description

The Church of the Exaltation of the Cross is located at the northern entrance to the town on the busy federal road 44 . With its distinctive architecture, it sets a clear urban accent. The guidelines of the Archdiocese of Freiburg , which prescribed a nave , had only recently been relaxed . Nevertheless, the draft was initially rejected by the archbishop's ordinariate in 1961, before it was implemented due to the unanimous approval of the community, city dean's office and archbishop's building office. The floor plan is based on a deltoid with an obtuse angle. The roof, reminiscent of a tent , is pulled down to the floor on the sides. The detached tower repeats the layout of the church.
