St. Francis Church

The St. Franziskus Church is a Catholic church in the Waldhof district of Mannheim . The neo-Romanesque church was built from 1905 to 1907 according to plans by Ludwig Maier .

history

The modern settlement of today's Waldhof began with the establishment of the St. Gobain mirror factory in 1853 in the Käfertaler district. The company built a workers' settlement and in 1861 the so-called mirror church, which was under the patronage of the Assumption of Mary . In 1869 the Archdiocese of Freiburg approved a vicar for the Käfertal parish who was specifically responsible for Waldhof, and in 1876 a curate was set up. In the period that followed, other industrial companies settled in the area, so that the population increased rapidly and Waldhof soon had more inhabitants than the parent community of Käfertal.

In 1905 the foundation stone for a new church was laid. Ludwig Maier had drafted the plans , while the architect Christian Leonhard took over the construction management. On 28 May 1908, the Church of archbishop was Thomas Nörber in honor of St. Francis of Assisi consecrated . An independent parish was established the following year . During the Second World War , the church was damaged in an air raid. The fire that hit the tower and roof could be extinguished in time. The preserved neo-Romanesque furnishings and in particular the painting were then removed during a major renovation in 1953/54. In 1954, three new bells were purchased, and three more the following year. In 2002 the parishes of St. Franziskus, St. Lioba and St. Elisabeth merged to form the pastoral care unit Mannheim-Waldhof-Gartenstadt.
