St. Lawrence Church

The St. Laurentius Church is a Catholic church in the Käfertal district of Mannheim . It was built by Johann Friedrich Dyckerhoff between 1834 and 1835 in the classical style.

history

Käfertal was first mentioned in a document in 1227, a church in the village in 1393. It was consecrated to Saint Mauritius . After the Reformation was introduced in the Electoral Palatinate in 1556 , there were multiple changes of religion in the centuries that followed, until the church in the Palatinate church division was finally assigned to the Reformed (today the Protestant Union Church ). In 1727, the Catholics built a small church dedicated to Saint Lawrence . However, Käfertal did not have its own pastor; the pastors of the Feudenheim St. Peter and Paul Church were responsible for the care . An application for a separate parish was rejected in 1816.

In 1830 the little church was no longer sufficient for the 772 Catholics in Käfertal, so a larger new building was planned. Construction began in 1834 and the following year on November 15, 1835, the St. Laurentius Church was consecrated. The pulpit , altar and organ were taken over from the old church. In 1836 a new pastor was requested, but it was not until 1849 that the Archbishop of Freiburg , Hermann von Vicari , elevated Käfertal to a parish.

With a view to the 100th anniversary in 1935, Karl Degen painted a ceiling painting in the choir that showed a scene from the life of St. Lawrence. Oskar Martin-Amorbach created the two side altars and Josef Amberg the high altar . In an air raid in 1944, the choir was destroyed and the roof covered. The bells fell victim to metal deliveries during World War II . The damage to the building had been repaired by 1954 and the following year the bell was complete again. In 1973/74 a side extension was added and the interior changed. Due to the shortage of priests in the Catholic Church, the neighboring parishes of St. Laurentius, St. Hildegard and Twelve Apostles merged in 2003 to form the pastoral care unit Käfertal-Vogelstang.

description

St. Laurentius Church, front view

The St. Laurentius Church is located in the center of Käfertal, not far from the old town hall. Both buildings were built in the Weinbrenner style typical of Baden at the time - a variant of late classicism named after Friedrich Weinbrenner . The church is a simple plastered building with arched windows . The tower with a square floor plan is almost completely drawn in and is covered by a pyramid roof.

At the front is the main portal, the arch of which is highlighted, a walled-in arched window above, only the skylight left open, and a semicircular window . The triangular gable , which is interrupted by the tower and there continues the cornice in the transom profile of the walled-up window, is striking . The nave has a choir with a semicircular end and is covered by a gable roof. In the 1970s, the nave was widened to the east and designed in the style typical of the time.
