The St. Peter and Paul Church is a Catholic church in the Mannheim district of Feudenheim . According to the history of its origins, the church has a Gothic tower, a baroque nave and a functional transept.

history

In the 9th century a basilica in Feudenheim was mentioned that was owned by the Weissenburg monastery . In 1496 the Worms Synod described the parish church consecrated to the apostles Peter and Paul . After the introduction of the Reformation in 1556, the church, like the entire Electoral Palatinate, was subject to multiple religious changes before it was awarded to Catholics in 1707 after the Palatinate church was divided. The Feudenheim pastors looked after the Catholics in Käfertal until 1849 and in Wallstadt until 1904, since their churches had gone to the Reformed .

baroque front

Increasing population towards the end of the 18th century led to the desire to enlarge the church. The old ship of geosteten building was demolished and increases according to the plans of the Mainz Lieutenant J. Hertling to 1786 the tower and next to that a new ship in North-South direction and a new choir built. Auxiliary Bishop Stephan Alexander Würdtwein consecrated the church on September 30, 1787. In 1827 the church was assigned to the Archdiocese of Freiburg and in 1910, after it had previously belonged to the Weinheim chapter or deanery , it became part of the Mannheim city deanery . Ludwig Maier renovated the church between 1898 and 1902 . The front facade was redesigned and the interior of the altar was decorated and a ceiling painting was attached. However, the planned increase in the church tower did not take place.

During the Second World War , the roof of the church and several windows were damaged. After the war, Feudenheim took in many bombed-out people from downtown Mannheim; a large residential area was newly developed, making the church again too small. Until 1956, according to the plans of Hans Rolli, the nave was extended, given a new roof and then a transept was built. The old organ and the two side altars were brought into the hospital church and the old entrance portal at the church tower was bricked up. From 1982 to 1983 the church was renovated and redesigned according to plans by Heinz Heß , remaining work lasted until 1985. After a fire in February 2012, the church had to be renovated, with the group of figures on the altar of the old church being reintegrated into the church space and on the left attached to the main portal. Since 2005, the Feudenheim parish with Christ-König-Kirche ( Mannheim-Wallstadt ) and St. Peter ( Ilvesheim ) forms the pastoral care unit Mannheim-Ost. Since 2015, Feudenheim has formed the pastoral care unit Maria Magdalena (SSE-MM for short) together with the Catholic parishes of Ilvesheim, Wallstadt, Käfertal and Vogelstang.

description

Figure niche

The St. Peter and Paul Church is in the center of Feudenheim on the main street. The Gothic west tower, which is covered by a copper, eight-sided tent roof, rises above a square floor plan. A cornice divides the tower into two parts. The ribbed vault has been preserved on the ground floor. The front of the baroque nave is divided into three axes by risalits . The figure niche above the portal covered by a basket arch is from the renovation around 1900. The transept, which was added in 1956, has grid windows and a retracted apse . The window walls deal with “Seed and Harvest”, “Peter and Paul”, “Jesus saves Peter”, “Conversion of Saul” and are by Emil Wachter .

Since the redesign in 1982/83, the organ with 1867 pipes has stood on a pedestal directly at the entrance portal. On the south side of the transept, to the left of the apse, a two-panel, three-meter-wide and ten-meter-high silk painting by Margot Raumer and a statue of the Virgin attributed to Johann Michael Düchert from 1788 was hung from the ceiling to the floor . In February 2012, the silk painting caught fire and was completely destroyed. The fire also affected the statue of the Madonna and made thorough cleaning and renovation of the church necessary.

To the right of the apse is the baroque baptismal font made of red sandstone from approx. 1790, behind it - at overhead height on the wall - the 1.30 meter high figures of Peter and Paul from 1901, carved from wood . Frido Lehr created the ambo and canteen . The altar and the organ were consecrated in 1985. The organ has 28 registers , divided between the pedal and two manuals and was built by Orgelbau Vier .

The ring consists of five bells . After the “ metal donation ” in World War II, it was completed again in 1953. After the former branch church of Christ-König received a new bell, in 2006 one of the discarded bells was set up at the main entrance of the St. Peter and Paul Church.
