geography

The Heiligkreuzkapelle is located in the Kahlgrund between Oberwestern and Großkahl , at the foot of the Habersberg , at the so-called Ziegelhütte. The Rotermichbach rises directly next to the chapel and flows into the Westerbach in Unterwestern .

history

Around 1400 Friedrich Geipel von Schöllkrippen donated the parish of Ernstkirchen , next to a spring , an altar "Zum Heiligen Kreuz". At this point the paths of the surrounding villages met up to Birkenhainer Straße . Originally the services of the Obere Kahlgrund and the Westerngrund took place at this location .

On a map from 1562, a building with a small tower was shown at this point . It was called " Heuligkrutz ". The chapel fell into disrepair towards the end of the 16th century. During the Reformation , the Geipel family was asked to renovate the building . In 1698 a new building was built , which was closed again a hundred and thirteen years later due to its dilapidation. The bell was also removed.

Around 1848 the owner of the nearby brickworks rebuilt the chapel in the same place. This existing building was preserved for over 130 years and was replaced by today's chapel in 1982.
