Surname

Parish office Schöllkrippen-Ernstkirchen

Ernstkirchen was originally the name of the parish that was owned by the St. Peter and Alexander Monastery . It then went to the church and later to the whole place. In the past one wrote "Ernistkirchen" . The name is derived from the Middle High German words "ernest" and "kirche" . It means hall and church . The original name goes back to the church in the open field.

geography

Ernstkirchen is located in the middle Kahlgrund between Langenborn and Sommerkahl , directly on the 2305 state road . The hamlet is officially not a part of the municipality and is located in the Schöllkrippen district. Ernstkirchen consists of the Church of St. Catherine , a rectory , a cemetery and a former monastery with the school at that time . Today Ernstkirchen has grown together with Schöllkrippen. There is an industrial park across the street . The “Haus Mirjam” foundation has settled in the old monastery buildings.

church

The altar under the tower

Saint Catherine is a church in the shape of a cross. It was built in the corridor because of its proximity to trade routes such as Eselsweg and Birkenhainer Straße . The main thoroughfare from Birkenhainer Straße to Aschaffal led out of Kahlgrund in Ernstkirchen, which is why this place was an obvious choice. The church was built in the 14th century; the rectory and the monastery building with the school did not appear until the second half of the 18th century. According to documents, the parish and an earlier smaller church already existed before 1184. Ernstkirchen is the oldest parish in the former Alzenau district and is therefore known as the “mother church of the Kahlgrund” . A total of four major alterations were made to the church. The original Romanesque building was followed by an early Gothic church with a tower around 1300 . This was renovated in 1621 and received the new ship in 1702. The width of the old ship can still be seen from the roof structure. In 1730 the old tower was replaced by a three-storey, hexagonal onion tower . In 1738 the church got the baroque interior, which was partly replaced by a neo-Gothic one in 1862 . 1958 was renovated again and the neo-Gothic was removed. Parts of the old altar can be found today in the church of Schimborn .

Bildstein

The picture stone

In May 1958, during renovation work in the church building, a picture stone was discovered buried in the floor under the altar , which is unique due to its many Christian and pre-Christian signs and decorations. It is believed that the stone was laid in the ground during previous renovations. The assumption that this stone is the gravestone of an important person is justified, as the symbol of the dead rune can also be seen on it. Further graves are located under the nave and the foundation of the tower . The creation of the picture stone is estimated to be around the year 800.
