The Westerbach, also known as the Westernkahl , is a 6.3 km long right tributary of the Kahl , which flows through the Westerngrund in the district of Aschaffenburg in the Bavarian Spessart . It arises in the district of Huckelheim through the confluence of the Querbach and Huckelheimer Bach .

Surname

The original name Western (around 1282 Weysluthera ) is made up of three parts of the name. The Middle High German basic word is an abbreviation of ahe , which means water . The Old High German middle link Hludira stands for rushing . The first part of the name comes from the Old High German word Weiz , which means wheat . Accordingly, it was a rushing stream on which wheat was grown.

The Western gave their names to the Westerngrund and the municipality of Westerngrund with the districts of Upper and Lower Western .

geography

Spring streams

Querbach

The Querbach rises from the Arzborn (sometimes called Atzborn), a larger spring on the Hohen Querberg (474 m), northeast of Huckelheim, near the state border with Hesse . At 2 km, the Querbach is the longer source stream.

Huckelheim Bach

The 1.5 km long Huckelheimer Bach rises north of Huckelheim. It feeds a pond and joins the Querbach in Huckelheim .

course

After the union of the two source streams, the Westerbach flows parallel to the AB 14 district road in a southerly direction through Oberwestern , which belongs to the municipality of Westerngrund . There he takes up the water of the Herzbach . The geographic center of the EU has been on its left valley slopes since 2013 . The Westerbach runs past the hamlet of Polsterhof to Unterwestern , where the Rotermichbach, which rises at the Heiligkreuzkapelle, flows into it. The Schneppenbach flows into the Westerbach as the largest tributary in Schneppenbach . In Schöllkrippen it reaches the Kahltal , where it is led into a concrete channel and flows into the Kahl at the intersection of state roads 2305 and 2306 .

Alongside the Geiselbach , Reichenbach and Sommerkahl, the Westerbach is one of the largest tributaries of the Kahl.

history

Mills

Similar to the Kahltal , there were also some mills in the Westerngrund, all of which are now closed. The Westerbach and a number of other bed springs from the Buntsandsteinspessart provided enough water for the drive. Today almost all mill wheels have disappeared, but in a few mills the interior furnishings are still there, of others only the name remains.
