The Roman Catholic parish church of Zirl is in the Unterdorf in the market town of Zirl in Tyrol . The parish church Heiliges Kreuz belongs to the deanery Telfs in the diocese of Innsbruck . The church and the cemetery are under monument protection .

history

It was founded in the 19th century under the direction of Cons. Peter Alois Auer and Frühmesser Alois Moriggl. The church painter Franz Plattner with Josef Arnold the Younger designed the entire interior with frescoes in powerful, bright colors. The work kept the painter busy for a long time, for example the ceiling frescoes were created between 1862 and 1874. Also noteworthy are the abstract ornamental motifs that completely fill the walls of the church, as well as the gilded pulpit.

The Zachäussingen in Zirl in front of the church has been part of the intangible cultural heritage in Austria since 2015 .

architecture

The dominant use of the round arch places the building under the neo-Romanesque buildings of the 19th century. The materials and construction techniques of the time made it possible to install significantly larger windows than would originally have been possible in Romanesque architecture. The incoming sunlight brings out the frescoes all the more powerfully.

Gothic style elements can be found in the pointed arches of the altar and the pulpit, but these harmonize with the overall structure.

The church vault decorate u. a. Representations of the birth and resurrection of Christ. Immediately above the altar the Holy Trinity is depicted, together with Mary, the prophets of the Old Testament, the four evangelists and surrounded by the people of believers.

On both sides of the choir there is the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and the raising of Lazarus.

The artist succeeds in creating an impressive interplay between sunlight and fresco on the left side of the choir, which depicts the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. At noon, the rays of the sun bathe the Messiah and the people in his immediate vicinity in an almost glistening light. Those waiting for him, desperately hoping, whose most urgent, all too understandable wish is earthly, remain - still - wrapped in a semi-darkness. Power and certainty of the coming salvation are thus represented together with doubts on this side, human toil and despair.

Furnishing

The neo-Gothic furnishings with the high altar, six side altars, pulpit, choir stalls and confessionals were created around 1850/1860.

organ

The organ of the parish church goes back to a new building by Joseph Aigner (Schwaz) from the years 1851/52. The case , the decor of which contains neo-Gothic elements, is typical of Aigner's design language and can be easily compared with other instruments in his workshop. The superstructure is divided in two so that the windows behind the organ are not completely covered. In 1948/49 and 1981 the original 30 register instrument was rebuilt, both works were carried out by the Reinisch-Pirchner company (Steinach am Brenner). The works carried out in 1981 include a. the expansion of the pedal range to 30 tones, as well as the renewal of the prospect pipes and the play system. The fronts of the manual lower keys are provided with gold-ornamented parchment strips in the Aigner manner. The organ has 28 registers, divided into the main unit , substation and pedal .
