Franz Plattner (born August 13, 1826 in Zirl , Tyrol , † April 18, 1887 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian church painter .

Live and act

The eldest son of the farmer Joseph Plattner zu Zirl in the Upper Inn Valley worked on his father's farm until he was 16. First he was sponsored by the pastor of Zirl and received artistic lessons for three years from the crib painter Anton Handl in Hötting near Innsbruck . In 1842 he became a student of Josef Arnold the Elder. Ä.

In 1845 Plattner began an artistic training at the Academy in Vienna , into which he was accepted on January 7, 1846. He studied there until the summer of 1852 with Leopold Kupelwieser , Carl Rahl , Carl Mayer and Carl Ritter von Blaas . During this period of study he joined the Tyrolean student company in 1848. This was followed by two years at the Munich Art Academy with Heinrich Heß and Johann Schraudolph . In 1851 he won an imperial scholarship in a competition to study in Rome .

Further stations in life are a stay in Italy in November 1852 and a stay in Rome in October 1853. In May 1855 he took part in the Cervarofest, the spring festival of German artists in Rome. In the same year he received a scholarship from the Ministry of Education. In 1857 he received an "extraordinary travel grant" through imperial approval. On June 8, 1858, Plattner was accepted into the Arch Brotherhood of Campo Santo. In July 1858 he married Carolina Stoy from Vienna in Trieste .

On March 29, 1859, Plattner returned to Innsbruck. He worked at the “ Tiroler Glasmalerei und Mosaik Anstalt ” founded in Innsbruck in 1861 and made a name for himself as a church painter in the region . In 1872 he was made an honorary member of the Academic Association Austria Innsbruck . In 1882 Plattner became Gildemeister of the "St. Lucas Guild" founded in Innsbruck. Five years later, on April 18, 1887, he died in Innsbruck.
