Karl Mayer (painter, 1810)
Karl Mayer (also Carl Mayer ; born January 19, 1810 in Vienna ; † June 8, 1876 ibid) was an Austrian painter .
life and work
The son of a civil servant studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Karl Gsellhofer . He won the Rome Prize of the Academy, which was connected with a stay in Rome . He then studied from 1834 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . From 1842 to 1851 he lived again in Italy, mainly in Rome, but also in Naples and other cities. In 1844 he became friends with the painter Karl Blaas . In 1852 he was appointed professor at the Vienna Academy, where he headed the preparatory school until 1865, then the general painting school until 1875.
Mayer was familiar with many styles and techniques and mainly created history and genre paintings , later increasingly religious works such as altarpieces and frescoes . From 1853 he was involved in the painting of the Altlerchenfeld parish church together with Joseph von Führich , Leopold Kupelwieser and Karl Blaas , where he was responsible for the design and execution of the frescoes on the right wall of the central nave.
