Church of the Holy Cross (Gliwice)
The Church of the Holy Cross (also known as the Holy Cross Church or Kreuzkirche ) is located on Daszynski and Kozielska (Coseler Straße) in downtown Gliwice . It used to be called the grammar school church. A Redemptorist monastery with an inner courtyard is attached to the west side of the Roman Catholic Church .
history
A wooden cross is said to have stood here at the fork in the paths to Ratibor and Cosel as early as 1409, which was replaced by a small wooden church in 1515. In 1623 a monastery and a church of the Franciscan Reformates were built on this site . The Polish King John III stayed in the monastery from August 22 to 23, 1683 . Sobieski on his way to Vienna. As a reminder, linden trees were planted, the last of which was still standing in 1929. Today two plaques on the town hall of Gliwice remind of the stay . The monastery was used until the 18th century. In 1810, as a result of secularization , it was converted into a Catholic grammar school, the monastery church became a grammar school church, which was used by the school community for church services. In 1921 the monastery buildings and the grammar school church were taken over by the Redemptorist Order . The church was enlarged and redesigned in a neo-baroque style by city building officer Karl Schabik . After that, she was with the patronage of "Holy Cross" consecrated and offered space for 2,000 worshipers.
In 1980 the church caught fire, but could be used again after three years.
organ
The organ was built in 1925. The slider chests -instrument has 25 registers on two manual works and pedal . The actions are pneumatic.
