The Barbarakirche (or Garrison Church ) is a church in the Polish city of Gliwice . It is located in the center of the city on Dworcowa Street (Bahnhofstrasse). Until 1945 it was called the Evangelical Church .

history

The new church was built between 1856 and 1859 by the Protestant community in Gleiwitz. The new church was consecrated on November 1, 1859. It replaced the 400 year old St. Barbara's Church. This previously Catholic half-timbered church in the Weißen or Beuthener suburbs was taken over by the Protestant community in 1820. At the place of the altar of the old church, a marble cross with a relief of the old St. Barbara church was erected in 1867. In 1945 the evangelical community was expropriated and the Polish state transferred the former evangelical church to a Catholic community. After 1945 the church was named Barbara Church.

architecture

The church was built according to plans by the Berlin architect August Stüler . The church tower has a height of 44.5 m.

The organ was built in 1909 by the organ builder Ernst Kurzer. The slider chest instrument has 43 stops on three manuals and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are pneumatic.
