history

The current church building was originally built as a chapel for the new Albertinum Konvikt. The foundation stone for the Albertinum was laid in 1930, and the Konvikt was completed at the end of 1931. On February 2, 1931, the Konvikt was consecrated by the Archbishop of Wroclaw, Adolf Bertram (1859–1945), in memory of St. Albertus Magnus and given the name Albertinum . In 1940 the activity of the Konvikt was stopped and the building was confiscated and resettlers from Bessarabia were housed in it. The seminary was dissolved by the Soviets in 1945.

In 1936 the parish of St. Michael was founded, the new church district was separated from the Peter and Paul parish . This community set up an emergency church at Gleiwitz airport . From October 1939, the congregation held its services in the Margaret Chapel. However, this was destroyed in 1945 when the Soviet army marched in. Then the community moved into the Konvikt chapel.

In 1956 the interior was given a new polychromy. The church has been used as a parish church since August 1963. In 1988 the new Church of Our Lady of Czestochowa was separated from the community . In 1994 the sanctuary was refurbished and the church renovated. On May 28, 2012, Bishop Jan Wieczorek blessed the new mosaic by Szymon Prandzioch in the chancel. On November 12, 2017, the Bishop of Gliwice Jan Copyc (* 1947) consecrated the church under the name St. Albertus Magnus in order to preserve the original name of the Konvikt.

architecture

The Albertus Magnus Church is a modern building with a facade made of red bricks and plaster. While the facade is largely kept simple, the entrance has a more elaborate design. In the entrance portal with a round arch there is a stone figure of Mary with the baby Jesus by the sculptor Hanns Breitenbach (1890–1945). The church does not have a steeple.

The choir was designed by Stanisław Słodowy.
