Islami Jatiya Oikya Front

The Islami Jatiya Oikya Front ( IJOF , Bengali ইসলামী জাতীয় ঐক্য ফ্রন্ট , "Islamic Front of National Unity") was a short-lived party alliance in Bangladesh that was formed before the 2001 parliamentary election . Politically dominant in the Alliance was the Jatiya Party .

history

The party front was founded on the initiative of the party leader of the Jatiya Party, Hossain Mohammad Ershad and Syed Fazlul Karim , the party founder of the Islami Shashontantra Andolan (ISA, later Islami Andolan Bangladesh ) shortly before the parliamentary election in October 2001. In addition to the two mentioned, three small parties also joined the alliance. These were the Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA), Pakistan National Party (PNP) and Islamic Constitution Movement (ICM).

The alliance was purely an alliance of convenience with the aim of winning constituencies. In terms of content, the Islamist ISA had little in common with the Jatiya Party. The ISA declared that it wanted to establish an Islamic regime in Bangladesh if it won an election and, for example, asked Ershad's wife to wear the veil at election rallies. In the election, the alliance ran in 281 of 300 constituencies under the symbol of the plow, the party symbol of the Jatiya Party, and won 17 constituencies. Their nationwide share of the vote of 7.25% was probably overwhelmingly to be seen as votes for the Jatiya Party. All 17 elected MPs belonged to the Jatiya Party and made no move after their election to keep the alliance alive, which is why it disintegrated shortly after the election.
