The Assumption Church or Friedhofskirche in Gliwice ( Gleiwitz ) is a Roman Catholic scrap wood church from the 15th century. The church is one of the oldest scrap wood buildings in Upper Silesia .

history

The scrap wood church comes from the place Zembowitz near Olesno ( Rosenberg OS ). It was probably built there in 1493. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was rebuilt and received its tower.

In 1925 the church was acquired by the city of Gleiwitz and in the same year it was moved to Gleiwitz, where it was rebuilt in the central cemetery under the direction of city planner Karl Schabik in order to use it as a cemetery church. At the same time, the crypt with the coffins of the founders was moved from Zembowitz to Gleiwitz. Town planning officer Schabik, museum director Dr. Heinevetter, city councilor Völkel and registrar Proheska involved. On October 30, 1926, the church was opened for use.

The measure to implement Schrotholzkirchen in cities in the vicinity of green spaces was very popular in Upper Silesia at the time and served not only to preserve the cultural assets but also to increase the attractiveness of the urban environment. Schrotholzkirchen were also set up in other cities in Upper Silesia.

During the socialist era the church slowly declined until the decision was made in the 1990s to dismantle and preserve it . It was rebuilt in its new location in the cemetery at ul. Kozielska 29 (Old Coseler Street).

The church has Gothic and Baroque elements.
