Amar Quartet (Zurich)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Amar Quartet is a Zurich- based string quartet founded in 1987 by Anna Brunner and her sister Maja Weber . The Amar Quartet gives concerts in the current line-up with Anna Brunner ( violin ), Igor Keller (violin), Hannes Bärtschi ( viola ) and Christopher Jepson ( violoncello ).

On the occasion of Paul Hindemith's 100th birthday in 1995, the Hindemith Institute in Frankfurt am Main gave the ensemble the name Amar Quartet . The composer Paul Hindemith founded a viola quartet under this name in 1922 , named after the first violinist Licco Amar .

In 1999, the Habisreutinger Foundation loaned the Amar Quartet two violins, a viola and a cello from the workshop of Antonio Stradivari . After Maja Weber left this quartet, these instruments were taken over by the newly founded Stradivari Quartet in 2007 .

In addition to Paul Hindemith's works, which are close to the heart of the ensemble, the Amar Quartet combines proven tradition in the selection of works with the conscious promotion of contemporary music. For this reason, the Amar Quartet regularly commissions well-known and less well-known contemporary composers. Swiss cultural workers are given priority.

As an innovative string quartet, it is important for the Amar Quartet to bring the supreme discipline of chamber music closer to a new, expanded audience outside of the connoisseur audience. For example, with high-quality, interdisciplinary projects such as collaboration with multimedia theater , ballet and jazz musicians .

Stylish interpretation and technical perfection, paired with artistic expressiveness, are the top priorities for the Amar Quartet.

The ensemble was awarded various international prizes during its studies with the Alban Berg Quartet in Cologne from 1998–2001 . a. Bubenreuth, Graz, Migros Culture Percentage , Geneva, London Millennium Award - excellent. In the summer of 2002 the Amar Quartet made a successful debut at London's Wigmore Hall and at the Lucerne Festival . Further debuts followed in spring 2003 at the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and at the Divonne Festival in France. In the summer of 2003 the quartet played and taught for the first time at the Kurt Pahlen Musical Summer Academy in Lenk in the Simmental .
