Ste-Croix (Arles)
The chapel Sainte-Croix (German Holy Cross Chapel) is located about 300 meters east of the Benedictine Abbey of Montmajour in the French department of Bouches-du-Rhône near the city of Arles . The chapel was classified as a monument historique as early as 1840 .
Numerous grave niches carved into the natural rock in the area around the chapel still bear witness to its former use as a cemetery chapel .
The design of the chapel, built in the 12th century, as a tetrakonchos , a room with a square floor plan and one conche on each side, is a construction method that was not very common in the Middle Ages and makes the chapel a remarkable feature. An open entrance hall is built to the west.
The only adornment of the exterior structure, which is only structured by simple buttresses, are the consoles with floral motifs under the eaves.
