The Holy Cross Chapel is a Catholic sacred building of the Clemensheim, a sister house for the Aschaffenburg convent of the Sisters of Divine Providence . Due to its size, it can also be called a church.

history

In 1899 a steam joinery was built on the corner of Clemensstrasse and Bertastrasse (Haus und Müller company). The joinery was taken over by the wood and metal goods factory Otto Neresheimer & Co. Descendants (owner: Anton Kraushaar). Around 1926, the Clemens Hofbauer Aid Organization for late priests took over the property. A chapel was set up in the St. Clemens study home. It was increased and provided with a bell tower. Around 1930 over 110 pupils lived there. The building no longer exists. Today's chapel was built there in 1964/65 according to plans by the Aschaffenburg architect Karl Georg Jung and consecrated on July 5, 1965 by the then Würzburg Auxiliary Bishop Alfons Kempf .

Architecture and equipment

"A trapezoidal choir adjoins an almost square nave. While the community room is only lit by a narrow band of light under the ceiling supported by open wooden trusses, colored light pours into the chancel from floor-to-ceiling louvre windows." From the beginning, the chancel did not have a high altar, but a so-called people's altar, as it was mainly introduced in the Catholic churches after the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). The design of the altar and the large, room-dominating Christ mosaic on the front wall was in the hands of the Aschaffenburg artists Helmut Albert and Willibald Blum. You also have the designs for other sculptures of the church such as B. delivered the statue of Our Lady and the Way of the Cross .

use

The chapel belongs to the St. Martin parish community of the Aschaffenburg inner city parishes. Regular mass celebrations and worship hours take place, which are published in the parish letter.
