The Roman Catholic Holy Cross Chapel in Klasmühle , a district of the Odenthal municipality in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), was built between 1947 and 1948. It is used as a branch church of the parish of St. Pankratius in Odenthal.

history

prehistory

In 1920 the Cologne Dominican monastery Heilig Kreuz acquired a plot of land in Klasmühle with the aim of building a recreation house there. With the acquisition of the land, the committed monks also regularly Sunday services to celebrate Klas mill. After the masses had initially taken place in a private house since September 1921, the services were celebrated in a former carpentry shop that had been converted into a chapel since 1924. In 1930 a chapel building association was founded in order to be able to build a larger and more permanent chapel.

Construction of today's chapel building

On November 16, 1947, the foundation stone for today's chapel was laid. The property and the timber were donated by local believers. During this time before the currency reform , large parts of the required building materials were bought in exchange for food, so that the chapel was also referred to as the bacon chapel in popular parlance . The Holy Cross Chapel was inaugurated on December 19, 1948 after its completion.

Partial renovation and maintenance

In 1987 a community room was completed as an extension to the chapel. In order to be able to secure the financing of the maintenance and operation of the branch church in the long term, the interest group Heilig Kreuz was founded as a support group in 2005 . In 2008, a partial renovation of the staircase leading to the organ loft and the pews became necessary as a result of pests.

Furnishing

The Holy Cross Chapel has a simple interior. The altar originally comes from the Cologne Ursuline monastery . The Dominican monastery in Cologne is said to have donated a wood splinter of the Holy Cross as a relic for the chapel. This should be embedded in the altar and is eponymous for the Holy Cross Chapel.

The leaded glass windows were created in 1948 by an unknown artist. They are also kept simple and use the cross with rose as a motif several times.
