Holy Cross Church

The parish church of the Holy Cross is a Roman Catholic church in the town of Bludenz in Vorarlberg. The church is a listed building .

history

In 1887, a cemetery was abandoned on today's Kirchenplatz. A small church of the Holy Cross was demolished in 1932. From 1932 to 1934, as the Laurentiuskirche became too small for the increasing number of Catholics in Bludenz, a church was built according to the plans of the architect Albert Otto Linder and consecrated in 1934. The first organ, a work by the Mayer brothers , was inaugurated in 1936. The new church was equipped with a five-part bell with the tone sequence c´ - es´ - f´ - as´ - c´´ and in 1939 raised to the status of the parish church. This bell was confiscated for war purposes in 1942.

architecture

The central building with the ground plan of an ellipse and a flat dome was built with limestone and quartz stones from the quarry in Lorüns. The broken, misted stones show up as exposed brickwork. The tower with a rectangular floor plan in the north of the church is covered with a flat roof. With the cross its height is 51 m. At the height of the bell chamber there are nine semicircular sound openings on each of its wider sides and six on each of the narrower sides. It is connected to the choir via the sacristy. A chapel is also attached to the choir.

The central room with arched windows has an 18 m high flat dome vault structured with 18 ribs arranged in a radial pattern. The central room has a lower side walkway with arched arcades towards the center. The handling has a flat beam ceiling and circular windows. In front of the choir arch is a space with a barrel vault. The square choir with a raised floor and a straight end is vaulted with a flat dome and side arcades with three arches. South of the choir is the Theresienkapelle. In the west is a segment arched gallery. To the left of the entrance is the baptistery and to the right the confessional chapel. In the basement is a lower church and a parish library.

The glass paintings were created by the glass painter Carl Rieder and show four angels and symbols of the eight bliss in the arched windows, the 12 apostles in the circular windows in the hall, and a five-part window in the Theresienkapelle with Jesus and Maria, Josef, Kolping and St. Hildegard, above the gallery Pope Gregory the Great , Pope Pius XI. and regional bishop, in the baptistery St. Christophorus, in the confessional chapel the prodigal son , in the sacristy Saints Jean-Marie Vianney , Don Bosco and Tharcisius .

Furnishing

The folk altar was created in 1976 by the sculptor Herbert Albrecht . The figures on the choir arch wall, left Immaculata, right St. Josef, both based on a design by Carl Rieder, was created by Franz Albertani and Johann Buchgschendtner . The sculptor Emil Suthar created the crossways reliefs.

Today's organ is a work by Martin Pflüger built in 1992 and comprises 44 registers on three manuals and a pedal .

The four bells from 1950 were cast by the Grassmayr bell foundry in Innsbruck . They hang on straight wooden yokes. In 1981 a fifth was added by Grassmayr, which hangs on a cranked metal yoke, weighs almost 2.5 t and is therefore the largest of the bells. The strike tone sequence is: c`– es` - f` - g` - b`. There is still a motor siren in the bell chamber .

The church offers around 800 seats and 1000 standing places.
