Carl Rieder (born November 18, 1898 in Schwaz , † September 17, 1980 in Schwaz) was a Tyrolean visual artist . In addition to paintings and drawings, he created church windows, frescoes and sgraffiti .

Life

Carl Rieder was born as the son of foreman Stefan Rieder, who worked in a tobacco factory, and his wife Maria, b. Purner, born. After primary school, Rieder attended the Prince-Bishop's High School Vinzentinum in Brixen from 1911, following his parents' wish for training as a clergyman , but left the school a year later due to insufficient performance in the subjects of Latin and mathematics. Back in Schwaz in 1912 Rieder was allowed to do an apprenticeship with the painter August Johann Wagner (1864–1935), a graduate of the Vienna School of Applied Arts . From 1913 to 1916 he attended the Innsbruck State Trade School, among others with Franz Burger , interrupted during the war by his employment with the State Railways from 1914 to 1915. In 1916 he was ordered to the Dolomites Front as Kaiserschützen , where he suffered an avalanche accident on the Tonale Pass in September 1918 went blind in the right eye. Through tireless work, he was able to compensate for this handicap in drawing. From 1919 to 1920 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Peter Halm , and until 1921 at the State College of the Berlin Museum of Applied Arts (since 1924 United State Schools for Free and Applied Arts ) with Emil Orlik and Emil Doepler . For the Tyrolean writer Hans Schrott-Fiechtl , he illustrated his novella Al fresco in 1920 .

In 1921 Rieder returned to Schwaz and married Maria Mair from the town the following year. In 1924 daughter Maria and in 1925 son Maximilian were born. In addition to his freelance artistic activity, Rieder also worked as a drawing teacher at the local vocational training school from 1928 to 1939. In addition, together with his artist colleagues Alois Norer, Josef Prantl and Jakob Rappel , among other things as secretary, he was involved in the Schwaz branch of the Association for Homeland Security in Tyrol, founded in 1929. The establishment of a local history museum in 1931 and efforts to preserve the Schwaz monuments followed the association's purpose of "Rescue, preservation and promotion of traditional things". The museum's holdings came from a private collection, estates from local artists and loans from the local population. His growing popularity and the major order for the designs for 14 windows of the church in the Episcopal High School Paulinum in Schwaz in 1931/32 enabled him to secure his family's livelihood in the future through numerous commissioned works for glass windows and frescoes in the sacred area.

When Austria was annexed to Hitler's Germany, he was classified as politically unreliable due to his position in the corporate state as district leader of the Ostmärkische Sturmscharen and in 1939 he was dismissed from school. In August 1939 Rieder was drafted into the German Wehrmacht , where he served with the staff of the State Rifle Battalion 925, but was released in 1941 at the request of the State Curator Oskar Graf Trapp to finish the design of the parish church of Ehrwald. Rieder took part in the 3rd "Gau-Kunstausstellung Tirol-Vorarlberg" in Innsbruck in the summer of 1942 with three of his paintings, like most of the well-known Tyrolean artists whose paintings corresponded in terms of content and form to the art ideas of National Socialism . From 1942 until the end of the war he worked for the customs border guard on the Swiss and Italian borders.

After the war, Rieder was entrusted not only with drafting glass windows for churches but also with the artistic design of secular buildings and by private clients. By the end of the 1970s, he created a large number of facade paintings, designs for church windows and frescoes in church interiors.

Rieder was one of the most versatile Schwaz artists and in the course of his artistic activity created countless designs and cardboard boxes for stained glass windows , mosaics , frescoes, sgraffiti as well as numerous paintings and also worked as a graphic artist with illustrations for books, calendars and magazines. Rieder's designs and boxes were implemented by the Tyrolean glass painting and mosaic institute . He painted stage sets for the theater performances of the Catholic Austrian Student Union (K.Ö.St.V.) Frundsberg.

"The stained glass windows of the church, made from boxes by the Schwaz painter Carl Rieder in 1929/30, are of great artistic importance and pointed the way for the turning away from historicism and the further development of the art of stained glass in Tyrol." "He made a radical break with traditional stained glass and created large picture windows as well as large ornamental windows and color compositions that sought new ways of expressing spiritual content through interspersed symbols, color values, color rhythms or color movements".

In addition to Secessionism , Expressionism and New Objectivity, there are also influences from the Beuron School in his works. "While a strong expressionist trait can initially be found in his stained glass windows, his frescos are in the tradition of New Objectivity from the start."
