St. Ulrich is the Catholic parish and pilgrimage church of Lavant in the Austrian state of Tyrol and is subordinate to the diocese of Innsbruck .

history

The Kirchbichl gained great religious importance in the 4th or early 5th century when a so-called early Christian bishop's church was built here. During its existence it has been modified and expanded several times. The splendidly furnished church was already used for the veneration of relics. The church and the surrounding settlement were destroyed around 600 by falling boulders.

After the new building between 750 and 1050, it was enlarged in the Gothic style from 1500 , but generously rebuilt in 1770 under Tomas Mayr in the Baroque style. The pointed arch portal was retained. The tower was built from 1660, but completion took about 30 years. In addition to its function as a parish church, it also serves as a pilgrimage church, the reason for which is a miraculous Madonna from the 17th century.

The organ dates from 2002, but was installed in the old case from the 17th century.

Stems

During archaeological excavations in the 1990s, remains of the old early Christian church from the 5th century were discovered. The last complete renovation took place in 1992–1996.
