Franz Michel Willam

Franz Michel Willam (born June 14, 1894 in Schoppernau , Austria ; † January 18, 1981 in Andelsbuch ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic priest , theologian and writer .

Life

Franz Michel Willam graduated from the Vinzentinum in Brixen in 1914 . After completing his studies, he was ordained a priest in 1917 . In addition to various chaplain activities , he continued his studies and graduated in 1921 with a doctorate in theology in Vienna. In the 1920s he also began writing. On behalf of the Herder publishing house , he wrote The Life of Jesus in the Land and People of Israel . This work was published in 1933, had ten new editions by 1960 and was translated into eleven languages. In 1934 he became a chaplain in Andelsbuch, where he stayed until his death.

Willams complete works comprise 33 books and 372 articles, which have been published in 79 different journals. The life of Jesus in the land and people of Israel was his most important work. The aim of this book was to present the life and thus the person of Jesus to people in a narrative form, based on the Gospels, the content of which he knew how to fill with life through his folklore studies. Pope Benedict XVI mentions Willam in the foreword to his Jesus book and counts him among the authors of "inspiring Jesus books" in the 1930s and 1940s. Willam also made a name for himself as a Newman researcher. In 1965 Franz Michel Willam was awarded the Gold Medal of Honor of the State of Vorarlberg by the State Council of Honor .
