Reimmichl (actually Sebastian Rieger ; born May 28, 1867 in St. Veit in Defereggen , † December 2, 1953 in Heiligkreuz (municipality of Hall in Tirol) ) was a Roman Catholic priest and poet.

Life

His parents were the company manager Johann Rieger and his wife Maria, geb. Brugger. After high school in Brixen ( South Tyrol ) he attended the seminary and was ordained a priest in 1891. He then worked as a pastor in Stilfes near Sterzing, Sexten , Dölsach in East Tyrol and Sand in Taufers ; In 1898 he received the branch in Gries am Brenner . As a folk poet he published his first stories and tales in the Tiroler Volksbote . There he worked as an editor from 1897. His pseudonym Reimmichl comes from this time, based on an original living in Sexten at the time, the Michl , a shoemaker who excelled as a storyteller.

From 1914 until his death he worked as a chaplain in Heiligkreuz in Tyrol . Reimmichl died in 1953 at the age of 86. He was buried in the Heiligkreuz cemetery.

The poet

Reimmichl's Volkskalender has been published since 1920 (until 1924 under the name of the Tyrolean Calendar ), each in a North and East Tyrolean edition (from Tyrolia ) and a South Tyrolean edition (from Athesia ). There are also around 70 book titles (novels, short stories, collections of stories). His literary products had entertainment as well as moral and religious educational value and promoted identification with a well-founded awareness of Tyrolean homeland. They quickly became known in Tyrol and are enthusiastically received by the people, especially the rural people with whom they were close, and still find many readers today. In unaffected language, Rieger was able to give a deep insight into the human soul and into the dynamics of interpersonal relationships. He also wrote the text for the famous Tyrolean song Tirol isch lei oans (Tirol is unique).

The rights of the common people were a matter of concern to him, which was also expressed in his participation in the founding of the Tyrolean farmers' union.

In Rieger's texts, vehement anti-Semitism often emerged, which was suppressed in the numerous posthumous honors.

Appreciation

In 1937 Rieger was awarded the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Austrian Order of Merit .

In 1972 the Reimmichlgasse in Vienna- Simmering (11th district) was named after him. Streets were also named after Reimmichl in Hall in Tirol, Innsbruck , Lienz / East Tyrol, Rabland / South Tyrol and Reutte . On the occasion of his 125th birthday, Austrian Post issued a special postage stamp.
