The baroque church Heilig Kreuz in Gerlachsheim

The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Cross (also the monastery church of the Gerlachsheim monastery ) in Gerlachsheim was built as a baroque church by Father Sebaldus Appelmann in 1723–1730 under the supervision of Abbot Sigismund Hauk . Since then, the three-aisled basilica has been one of the most famous churches in the region.

history

The Holy Cross Church was first mentioned around 1129, at that time as a monastery of the Premonstratensian Sisters . In 1525 the monastery was devastated during the peasant war. In 1563 it was repealed by the then bishop of Würzburg before the Oberzell monastery founded a priory . From 1723 to 1730, Father Sebaldus Appelmann and Abbot Sigismund Hauck built the Holy Cross Monastery on the foundation walls of the now too small Romanesque church. The Holy Cross Church was built next to it. It was consecrated to the Holy Cross on September 17, 1730 and used as a monastery again from now on. In 1803 the church and monastery fell to the Prince of Salm-Reifferscheid-Bedburg, this happened in the context of secularization . He sold the monastery to Baden in 1838 ; it now served as a castle. From 1875 the building served as an institution for the deaf and dumb until it was finally used as a district care and retirement home for the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952 . The monastery has been used as a school and office building since 2018. It currently houses the INAB vocational support organization, the Nardini school, a doctor's practice, the district hunters' association, an advertising agency and a practice for curative education.

The Holy Cross Church is now part of the Lauda-Königshofen pastoral care unit, which is assigned to the Tauberbischofsheim deanery of the Archdiocese of Freiburg .

Altars

The high altar

There are eight different altars in the baroque church.

The high altar was created in 1730 by Melchior Paulus from Bad Mergentheim . The Trinity of God is represented in the upper part of the altar. With a globe and scepter God is represented as father. The dove is used as a symbol for the Holy Spirit and is placed in the middle. The bread embodies Jesus, who is the center. Angel heads, angel sputtles and wreaths of clouds surround the image of the Holy Trinity. On the segment gables of the altar, St. Norbert and St. Augustine are depicted in life size. There are more angel sputters between the columns of the altar. In the center of the convertible altar is the altar sheet, an interchangeable picture that can be changed depending on the holiday. There are five different paintings available for this. The bottom section of the high altar is made up of four saints. From left to right: St. Bronislawa, St. Adrian, St. Jakob Lakop and St. Gertrud.

The cross altar

The cross altar was built in 1739 by Johann Peter Schaidthauf. The carving work was done by Anton Grimmbach. There is a tabernacle under the altar . Another two angel putti border the coronation of the altar, which consists of the coat of arms of Abbot Georg Fasel . Mary Magdalene can be seen in front of the cross on the large linen painting in the center of the altar . Next to the canvas painting are Maria and Johannes.

The Marienaltar was built in 1739–1740 by Johann Peter Schaidthauf and Anton Grimmbach. There are two paintings on this altar. The smaller upper painting shows Maria handing the scapular to Simon Stock. The central painting illustrates Maria Immaculata. It is from St. Michael and the Guardian Angel . Under this picture there is a glass sarcophagus in which the relic of St. Clemens is located.

The Joseph altar was created in 1739, the stucco marble is by Peter Schaidthauf, the coat of arms by Anton Grimmbach and the figure of St. Joseph by Ferdinand Tietz .

The Sebastianus altar

The Sebastianus altar was created in 1742 by Ferdinand Tietz. It is one of the most important works of art in the Church.

Peter Schaidthauf built the Hermann-Josef-Altar in 1740 together with Anton Grimmbach. On the work of art you can see Hermann Josef, who received the bishop's ring from St. Maria receives.

The family altar (people's altar) was built in 1740 by Peter Schaidthauf and Anton Grimmbach. On the painting in the center of the altar are Mother Anna and St. Joachim showed them teaching Mary the scriptures .

Today's celebration altar was built in 1990 by Frido Lehr . On the altar is a bronze ornament band that surrounds the altar and ends in the altar plate.

Bell jar

The Holy Cross Church has five bells from the Schilling bell foundry . Three of them were cast in 1957 and two in 1952. The main bell is located in the bell towers. There is also a small christening bell in the western bell tower. While the other bells were being collected during World War II , an unknown citizen of Gerlachsheim hid it in the Grünbach .
