The Johanniskirche in the monastery park Reinhardsbrunn / Thuringia was designated as the first cycle path church in Germany in 2001 . In 2009, the Evangelical Church decided to introduce the uniform label "Cycle Path Church", which was also associated with uniform standards. These standards have also been adopted by Catholic cycle path churches.

In the meantime, more than 280 Protestant and Catholic churches bear the logo awarded by the Evangelical Church in Germany ( EKD ). It guarantees that the church is in the immediate vicinity of a cycle path, is freely accessible during the day from Easter to Reformation Day, which in many places also applies to the winter half-year, and functions as a spiritual space. For this purpose, regular opening and closing services usually have to be organized on a voluntary basis. Flyers informing about the respective church and the cycle path church campaign are also continuously displayed.

Switzerland

The Reformed Churches in Bern-Jura-Solothurn took up the idea in 2014 and launched it as the “Velowegkirche” in line with Swiss usage. As a result, the first 16 Swiss churches were awarded the label in August 2015. They are all due to the Herzroute , which supports the project as a partner.
