The Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher in Lauda

The Roman Catholic Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher (also called the Blood Chapel ) in Lauda was built in the 13th century.

history

The origins of the building go back to the 13th century. The remains from this period are very small, such as the sacristy and the clogged windows. The reason for the construction of the chapel can be traced back to an alleged sacrifice of the host commissioned by a Jew . Allegations against Jews such as B. alleged desecration of the host or ritual murders spread especially in the Franconian area from the end of the 13th century. The result was persecution and murder actions directed against the local Jewish population. The Lauda Jews were not spared either. The history of origin shows a votive picture from the 17th century , which was initially removed from the chapel in 1987, but has been revised and commented on in the entrance area of the chapel since 2016.

The Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher belongs to the Lauda-Königshofen pastoral care unit, which has been assigned to the Tauberbischofsheim deanery of the Archdiocese of Freiburg since a reform of the deanery on January 1, 2008 .

Church building

The appearance of the chapel was often changed and renovated in the years after the 13th century. The current chapel has existed since 1682/1683. The last renovation took place in 2008. The “Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher”, as you can visit it today, was redesigned and redesigned in the entrance area by the architect Hanno Roters from the Archbishop's Building Department in Heidelberg. As a result, the chapel now presents itself as a place to deal with the past.

Among other things, you will find a high altar and the classic tabernacle with worshiping angels, a reliquary from the 19th century, a Pietá from around 1500 and a fourteen-helper panel with the Christ child from the 17th century. In the new entrance area there is also a panel painting from the late 17th century, which is a copy of Rubens' painting “The Interest Groschen”. The old votive picture mentioned above, which was removed from the chapel in 1987, is now presented in a modern version and in comparison to a contemporary artistic response by Michael Salomon. From picture to picture, an exciting discussion is shown, which invites you to think about the consequences of the legend that led to the construction of the chapel at the time.
