St. Burkhard (Messelhausen)

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Burkhard in Messelhausen , a district of Lauda-Königshofen in the Main-Tauber district , was donated in 1595 by Stephan Zobel von Giebelstadt and his wife Kordula Echter . Next to the church is a cemetery that includes a family vault. The church belongs to the pastoral care unit Lauda-Königshofen, which is assigned to the deanery Tauberbischofsheim of the Archdiocese of Freiburg .

history

The church has a single nave and flat-roofed nave with a slate-gray west tower. In terms of art history, the church is of great importance and, with its architectural style and furnishings, is a masterpiece of Renaissance art. The church's apostle altar, which was donated by Bishop von Echter von Würzburg in 1596, serves as the artistic figurehead. Above the main portal you can find the coats of arms of the founders of the church, Zobel and Echter. The current main altar was donated by Franz von Zobel in 1717, while the side altar was created in the middle of the 18th century. On the occasion of the four-hundredth anniversary in 1995, changes were made to the equipment .

Furnishing

Apostle altar

The altar of the apostles, which was donated by Bishop Echter von Würzburg in 1596, represents an exodus of the apostles from Jerusalem. The coat of arms of the Echter family can be found on the ledge of the main cornice.

Main altar and epitaph

The main altar was donated by Franz von Zobel in 1717 and shows an epitaph at the level of the left transept . The altar depicts the beheading of John the Baptist , as well as secondary figures such as Saint Kilian , Boniface , the church patron of the community, Burkhardus, Nicholas, Francis of Assisi and Antonius of Padua . Above that figure is a relief image of the Last Judgment .

Side altar

The side altar, which was carved from wood in the middle of the 18th century, depicts the Visitation of Mary .

Bells

The church also owns three bells, which were cast by the Nuremberg bell founder Christoph in the year it was built.
