The parish church of St. Markus in Unterbalbach

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Markus in Unterbalbach was built in the Weinbrenner style in 1824 .

history

A church built in 1631 with the same patronage stood in the same place. The altar of this earlier St. Mark's Church was located where the entrance to the tower is now. In 1824 construction began on a larger St. Mark's Church, the parish of which was headed by Pastor Auth, who worked in Unterbalbach from 1814 to 1833 . In July 1825 the construction of this church was completed. The expanded church, which can accommodate around 400 people, was dedicated to St. Mark the Evangelist . The costs incurred were taken over by the Grand Duchy of Baden , as the successor to the Hochstift Würzburg , and the German Order of Mergentheim.

From 1977 to 1979 the church was completely renovated to include the sacristy . Until its dissolution on August 31, 2013, the parish of St. Markus belonged to the pastoral care unit Messelhausen. Since September 1, 2013, it has been part of the Lauda-Messelhausen pastoral care unit, which was expanded on September 1, 2014 and is now called the Parish Association of Lauda-Königshofen Pastoral Care Unit.

In March 2016, the restored tower cross of the church was blessed by Pastor Walterspacher and then reassembled. The entire church building is to be renovated for around 1.6 million euros by 2018. The renovation began in 2010.

The Markuskirche belongs to the pastoral care unit Lauda-Königshofen, which is assigned to the deanery Tauberbischofsheim of the Archdiocese of Freiburg .

Another bell by Christof Glockengießer comes from the 17th century, but is currently not rung, but is located in the forecourt of the church. The five-part bell was consecrated on August 2, 1959. Due to the renovation measures, this historic bell was to be integrated into the belfry and to be rung as a death and baptismal bell.

The belfry consists of two floors. In the lower part there are the big bells 1 and 2 in two compartments. In the upper part there are the bells 3, 4 and 5.
