from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Fasel (born April 5, 1675 in Würzburg ; † September 12, 1747 ) was abbot of the Premonstratensian monastery in Oberzell in Zell am Main from 1738 to 1747 .

Oberzell before Fasel

Under the predecessors of Georg Fasel, the Oberzell Abbey flourished again. In the previous centuries the frequent armed conflicts in the area of the monastery had prevented the economic consolidation. At the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century, the abbey produced several highly learned monks who excelled in the fields of rhetoric and mathematics . The abbey in Würzburg's study house also played a major role here.

Under Fasel's direct predecessor, Abbot Sigmund Hauck , the monastery then succeeded in taking over the previously independent monastery of Gerlachsheim as a priory. From then on, both convents, Gerlachsheim and Oberzell, formed a community. The prior of Gerlachsheim, appointed by the abbot of Oberzell, rose to be the second most important monastery official. Sigmund Hauck also drove the new construction of the Gerlachsheim monastery church and the surrounding buildings.

Life

Georg Fasel was born on April 5, 1675 in Würzburg, the metropolis of the Würzburg monastery . Nothing is known about the family of the future abbot, but his brother Johann Philipp Fasel rose to become dean of Neumünster Abbey . It can probably be assumed that he came from a respected family in Würzburg. First he probably attended a Latin school in the episcopal city. The young man entered the Premonstratensian order early on.

In 1693 Georg Fasel became part of the convent of Oberzell Abbey. At the same time he began studying at the University of Würzburg . He completed his studies in 1697 before receiving his doctorate in theology in 1699 . Now a typical monastic career began. In 1700, Fasel was recorded as Praeses studiorum (Latin for prefect of studies) in the abbey's study house. In 1704 he was still in charge of the Oberzell training center in Würzburg. He also received an award for his education.

A year later, in 1705, the theologian was appointed lecturer in the Premonstratensian Canons of Oberilbenstadt near Friedberg. He held this office for a total of twelve years. Then Fasel returned to Franconia . Now he was appointed Prior of Oberzell in 1713. Georg Fasel rose to the position of administrator of Gerlachsheim in 1717 and headed the convent as an independent prior from 1724. In 1730 he became provost of the Unterzell women's convent .

When Abbot Sigmund Hauck died in August 1738, the monks elected Georg Fasel as their new abbot on September 11th of the same year. One of the first official acts of the new prelate was to equip the monastery church of Gerlachsheim with new altars. Fasel was also the first abbot to speak to the builder Balthasar Neumann . In the summer of 1746, the construction of the new buildings in Oberzell began. Fasel did not live to see the completion. The abbot died on September 12, 1747.
