The technical high school of the Wilhelm-Maybach-Schule Heilbronn (short: TG at the WMS) is a technical high school in Heilbronn , Baden-Württemberg . Founded in 1969, the Technical Gymnasium at the WMS offers students a general Abitur within three years.

In 1973, the former industrial school was renamed Wilhelm Maybach School Heilbronn after Wilhelm Maybach, who was born in Heilbronn . Currently (as of 2018) the profiles mechatronics, technology and management, information technology and design and media technology are offered. Around 400 students are currently attending the technical high school in Heilbronn.

history

chronology

In 1968 the council of the city of Heilbronn advised on the establishment of a technical high school in Heilbronn. On January 23, 1969, the local council, responsible for the school, decided that lessons could begin in September 1969.

In 1998 the entire WMS was to get a computer with an Internet connection. It was clear that this was not enough, which is why the manager of the TG, Werner Fröhlich, advocated 50 ISDN lines for the 500 PCs in the technical school center . Since the WMS alone required 20-30 connections, it bought some of the connections for a total of 450,000 marks from its own money. A teacher from the TG helped to keep the costs as low as possible when it came to the cabling. There were only 85,000 Marks as a special allowance plus another 40,000 Marks for upgrading the IT area, which is why the school negotiated with the city to cover the costs.

From 1999 onwards, 100 computers with internet access were available to the total of 2500 WMS students. At the same time, each student was given their own email address. The whole thing was made possible by a project by students, who thus save the city about 200,000 marks per year, since no company had to be commissioned to set up and maintain the system, but rather the IT students passed their knowledge on to their successors.

From August 2007 onwards, a new part of the building was built, which now houses the canteen, kitchen and the auditorium, which is glazed on two sides. Along with the construction work on the cafeteria, the south exit and the foyer were also rebuilt. The canteen that opened in the 2008/2009 school year made the kiosk at the current north exit superfluous and disappeared. The canteen was made possible, among other things, by the city of Heilbronn, which provided financial means for the meal care of the students.

In 2014, after five years of planning and construction, the D-Bau was opened. The converted part of the building houses workshops where forging, welding and soldering can take place. In the part of the building, among other things, lessons in metal construction technology and pneumatics are held.

In 2017 the new chemistry rooms were completed, which promote teaching with modern facilities. The previous rooms remained unchanged for almost 40 years, which is why this renovation was urgently needed.

Personal changes

The WMS Friends' Association was founded under Willi Glasze, who became the headmaster of the WMS in 1984 and held this position until 2003.

Dieter Kinzler was a department head from the foundation of the TG until 1996. During his 27 years in this position, he taught physical education and math. He was very calm and level-headed, and for this he was very much appreciated by his colleagues and also popular with the students.

1996 Mr. Fröhlich took over the management of the TG. In addition to his function as head of department, he was also the chairman of the Abitur commission for technology at the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture. Under his leadership, the profile subjects GMT (design and media technology), IT (information technology) and TuM (technology and management) were added to the profile subject technology. As a result, the TG has meanwhile become the largest and most diverse TG in all of Baden-Württemberg. Later, Spanish was added as a third foreign language at the TG. The range of the TG was so great at that time that even many students from the Sinsheim, Ludwigsburg and Mosbach areas came to the Heilbronn TG. This rush ended, however, with a reform of the Ministry of Education, which provided for a vocational high school at every vocational school. This decline in the number of students was the trigger to convert the technology profile into mechatronics, as more students were interested in it due to the more modern content.

From 2003 to 2016, Mr. Troßbach was the headmaster, who always stood up for the students and, according to Mergel, “has significantly shaped and developed Heilbronn as an educational location in recent years”.

Since 2016, Mr. Thumm has been the headmaster of the WMS in office.

Exchange programs

In 1996 there was a rugby game with French students who stayed at the WMS for a week because of a student exchange. The French students taught the TG students rugby on the floor of a former American baseball field, which was made difficult by poor weather conditions.

The next student exchange was due again in 1997. The exchange between the students of the Athens High School in Troy and the Heilbronner TG was financed by Daimler-Benz and Ford, who made the exchange possible for two students each in the form of a scholarship.

Profiles

Guiding principle

"Investing in knowledge still pays the best interest"

The TG is a three-year advanced high school. It aims to give scientifically and technically gifted young people access to a scientific college or university.

In addition to the emphasis on mathematical, scientific and technical subjects, due emphasis is placed on the humanities subjects. The professional relevance in the individual subjects is emphasized.

SMV

In Baden-Württemberg, the elected student council of the students in a school is referred to as student co-responsibility (SMV) . The SMV represents the student body internally and externally within the framework of the possibilities under school law and is a voting member of the school conference.

In addition, the WMS SMV tries to enrich everyday school life with various events.

In the past, this was done through tournaments in various sports, ski weekends, Christmas parties, summer festivals and social activities such as blood donation or stem cell typing.

As a financial security, the SMV sells sweets and drinks in the "Milchlädle" during the breaks. An excursion also took place internally at SMV.

At the entire Wilhelm Maybach School, four student representatives are elected to represent all students.

Student prices

The Maybach Prize has been awarded to WMS students since 1979 and honors students with particularly good academic performance and social commitment. The five best students of the year always receive the award.

The following prizes are awarded to high school graduates.

particularities

Projects

The "Solix" solar mobile

The largest project so far was the "Solix" solar car. Under the supervision of the project manager Mr. Schlegel and Mr. Plück, the five students built a solar mobile according to the requirements of the Tour de Sol .

Solar mobile "Solix"

The focus of the students was on building an aerodynamic vehicle in lightweight construction with a self-supporting body. In order to save energy, the students used an energy recovery system when braking and pushing the solar mobile. In the youth research competition in 1994, the solar car took first place.

Robot as a handling machine

In 1990 three students built a handling machine under the direction of Mr. Hess. Due to the high workload, the pupils began with drafts and computer calculations in the 11th grade. The result of the work was a robot that can be controlled using a CPU in conjunction with a PLC.
