The Grünbach is a 20 km long stream in the Main-Tauber district in the extreme northeast of Baden-Württemberg , which flows into the lower Tauber from the right and northeast at the Gerlachsheim district of Lauda-Königshofen . If, as all hydrological variables suggest, except for the name alone, the main strand of the larger left tributary Wittigbach follows up to the constant source furthest from the mouth, it is almost 31 km long.

The Grünbach spring is about 364  m above sea level. NHN im Gewann Geldloch in the forest beginning east of Großrinderfeld - Gerchsheim in front of Kleinrinderfeld , which is already across the border in Bavaria . On its course, which initially faces south-south-west and is roughly parallel to the A 81 Würzburg  - Kreuz Weinsberg at most 2 km to the west , it flows through the village of Schönfeld and past the village of Ilmspan in the municipality, after which it crosses into the area of ​​the city of Grünsfeld . There, it flows through Paimar , Grünsfeldhausen and green field itself. In the old town it joins after almost 15 km by here already 25 km long left and approaching from the east Wittig Bach, whose stable source Bach Kesselboden ditch the Höfel fountain less than a kilometer north springs of Green Brook origin .

After a further 6 km in an S-loop to the south-west, which it ends in the west through Lauda-Königshofener village Gerlachsheim, it joins there next to the railway bridge of the Frankenbahn from the right at about 184  m above sea level. NHN in the lower Tauber .

Catchment area

The Grünbach has the largest catchment area among the tributaries of the Tauber, it covers approx. 250 km², of which 181.3 km² is the catchment area of ​​the Wittigbach and only 46.2 km² of its own upper course at its mouth. The catchment area is around 110 km² in Bavaria and 140 km² in Baden-Württemberg. In the south and west, some smaller tributaries of the Tauber compete with the Grünbach, to the north and east the watershed to the Main runs above the mouth of the Tauber.

  • Gerchsheimer Graben , from the right to below 240  m above sea level. NHN in Grünsfeld - Paimar , 10.8 km and 19.6 km². Flows as Wolfsgraben about 1 km northeast of the Gerchsheim outskirts from a lake at about 375  m above sea level.   • Wittigbach , from the left in Grünfeld at around 207  m above sea level. NHN , 11.1 km, with all upper reaches from the Grundgraben 25.0 km and 181.3 km². Arises at a little over 250  m above sea level. NHN at the Wittighausener border mill from the confluence of the Schafbach and Seebach / Gützinger Bach .
    • Schafbach , right upper course of the Wittigbach , 3.4 km, with all upper courses from the Grundgraben 13.9 km. Arises at almost 265  m above sea level. NHN on the southern edge of Kirchheim in Lower Franconia from the confluence of Rimbach and Moosbach .
      • Rimbach or Renkbach , right upper reaches of the Schafbach , as a name section 2.9 km, with all upper reaches from the Grundgraben 10.5 km and 29.1 km². Arises from the Rasiggraben at about 277  m above sea level. NHN through a name change at an inlet at the Egenburgerhof in Kirchheim.
        • Rasiggraben , 2.4 km, with the upper course Grundgraben 7.6 km. Arises at a little over 285  m above sea level. NHN through name change at the brief first entry of the brook to Baden-Württemberg and to the Großrinderfelder district from the Grundgraben .
          • Grundgraben , the uppermost part of the Wittigbach name, 5.2 km. Rises at about 370  m above sea level. NHN as Kesselbodengraben the Höfelsbrunnen in the southern Irtenberg Forest in the triangle from the state road 578 in the northwest, the A in the southeast and the state border with Baden-Württemberg in the southwest. The most important tributary of the Grünbach is the Wittigbach , which is more important in terms of length and size and, unlike that of the upper Grünbach , its valley is an important traffic axis. This arises as a basic ditch near Kleinrinderfeld , then runs through Kirchheim , Ober- and Unterwittighausen (municipality of Wittighausen ) and passes the Grünsfeld valley town of Zimmer, before it flows into the Grünbach after a total of 25.0 km.

Water quality

As of 2004, the course of the Grünbach recorded for this purpose from below the Ilmspan to the tributary of the Wittigbach in Grünsfeld was critically polluted (quality class II-III), from there on to the confluence like the Wittigbach from Wittighausen moderately polluted (quality class II).

Water protection areas

The Grünbach Group water protection area designated by ordinance of January 20, 2006 with WSG no. 128141 covers a protected area of ​​6,431.3 hectares. This makes it one of the largest water protection areas in the Main-Tauber district .

Shortly before Gerlachsheim, the Grünbach leads into the Tauberaue water protection area with WSG no. 128215.

Traffic routes

The Frankenbahn and the L 511 state road accompany the lower Grünbach from the mouth to Grünsfeld and then continue up the valley in the Wittigbach valley to beyond the state border to Bavaria (there as state road St 511).

Grünbachtal cycle path

The Grünbachtal cycle path runs along large parts of the Grünbachtal. The bike path is completely paved. In Grünsfeld it has a connection to the Wittigbachtalradweg and in Gerlachsheim to the Taubertalradweg .
