history

History and naming

The first mentioned in the 12th century as Obrendrieden , 1250 as Oberreiden , was in the Middle Ages ecclesiastical to Horgen , as its fourth watch . Tithes were paid to the Fraumünsteramt until 1812 . It was not until 1760–1761 that a separate Reformed parish and Reformed Church came into being .

After the Reformation in Zurich , this was also carried out in Horgen in 1525. The medieval church was henceforth used for Reformed church services, Catholic rituals were forbidden. During the Old Zurich War , during the Zurich Reformation by Ulrich Zwingli and the Counter-Reformation, Horgen and the surrounding area formed an outpost against Catholic Central Switzerland . This changed in the 19th century, initially through the Helvetic Republic , the Edict of Tolerance of 1807, which allowed Catholic services again for the first time in the canton of Zurich - albeit locally limited to the city of Zurich - and through the freedom of establishment and religious freedom of the Swiss federal state of 1848. The flourishing industry in Horgen and the surrounding area drew Catholic workers and their families from central and eastern Switzerland , but also from neighboring countries, to the left bank of Lake Zurich . Since Horgen was of particular importance as the center of the district , the first Catholic mission station was founded in Horgen on the left bank of Lake Zurich, with significant financial support from the domestic mission . In 1865, the first mass since the Reformation was celebrated in Horgen. In 1872 the St. Joseph's Church in Horgen could be designated. From 1874 the few Catholics living in Oberrieden belonged to the parish of St. Josef Horgen. As early as 1886, the clergy from Horgen in Oberrieden gave the children religious instruction . Only in the 20th century did the Oberriedner Catholics strive for an independent parish.

Development and construction history

On April 11, 1937, the pastor of Horgner held the first Catholic service in Oberrieden since the Reformation on the occasion of a people's mission , in the hall of the Sternen restaurant . From then on, a Catholic service was held in this hall every other Sunday. From 1947 the Sunday service was held in the singing hall of the toddler schoolhouse, and from October 7, 1962 in the newly built hall of the parish hall. On August 1, 1963, the Bishop of Chur , Johannes Vonderach, made Oberrieden parish rectorate. At that time, two apartments were rented for a clergyman and for parish activities in an apartment building at Schäppi-Näf-Strasse 8 . From February 1964, weekday services were also held in a basement room in the parish hall. From October 1965, the Catholics could use the Feld cemetery chapel for Sunday services.

On May 19, 1959, the Oberriedner Catholics founded the Oberrieden Catholic Church Building Association , which aimed to raise the money for a Catholic church in Oberrieden. Before the Catholic Church in the canton of Zurich was recognized under public law in 1963, the church building association collected money through 110,000 begging letters that were sent throughout Switzerland. On November 27, 1958, the Horgen church building association bought the Chrüzbüel property in Oberrieden. In 1962, the Oberrieden church building association commissioned the architects Burlet and Mathhys for a preliminary project for a church with 450 seats along with a rectory and parish premises. In the 1965 publicly advertised architecture competition in which 50 projects were received, three projects were recommended for further processing. These were the projects of Justus Dahinden , Zurich, Viktor Langenegger , Menziken AG and Alfons Weisser , St. Gallen. On June 29, 1967, Viktor Langenegger's three projects were chosen as the winner. However, on October 31, 1969, the church administration of Horgen refused to approve the construction of the planned church in Oberrieden, which set the construction of the Oberriedner church back years. In the 1970s, the cantonal monument preservation , which wanted to preserve the Chrüzbüel house , interfered in the building plans of the Catholics in Oberrieden. After years of negotiations, the Zurich administrative court decided that a Catholic church could be built on the Chrüzbüel area , but only if the historic building was preserved. On June 8, 1986, a poll of the Catholic parish of Horgen-Oberrieden decided that the church and the parish center on the Chrüzbüel area should be built according to the plans of the architects Erwin Peter Nigg and Egon Dachtler. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 10th, 1987 , the foundation stone was laid on October 25th, the bells were raised in the church tower by the primary school pupils of Oberrieden on June 25th, 1988 and the completed church was inaugurated by Bishop Johannes Vonderach on September 4th, 1988 become.

The parish of Heilig Chrüz with its 1,317 members (as of 2017) is one of the small Catholic parishes in the canton of Zurich.

Building description

Church tower and exterior

Free-hanging bells

The Heilig Chrüz church is located in Oberrieden on the site of the historic Chrüzbüel house on a narrow building site between the Alte Landstrasse and the Thalwil – Arth-Goldau railway line . Due to the vibrations from the railway, the church had to be realized as a solid concrete structure with triple-glazed windows. It is a round building with an open church tower in the direction of Alter Landstrasse , in which the four bells and the tower cross refer to the Catholic Church. There is a concrete sculpture by Otto Müller on the outer wall . It is entitled The Conversation and is intended to indicate the function of the outdoor area as a meeting place. Two water wells were discovered on the historic site during construction . One is visible in the foyer by the cloakroom through a square window. The second came out when the old wash house was demolished. It is located on today's church forecourt.

The bell was cast on January 29, 1988 in the H. Rüetschi bell foundry , Aarau. The four bells are dedicated to the four evangelists and have Latin quotations from the respective gospel.

foyer

A path leads the visitor from the Alte Landstrasse past the Chrüzbüel house to the church foyer and from there into the church's rotunda. The rotunda is flooded with bright daylight through skylights. Wooden chairs are grouped in a semicircle around the altar . The church offers space for 120 people and can be enlarged to 230 seats by opening the church wall towards the foyer. The altar, ambo and tabernacle were designed by the architect Erwin Peter Nigg and realized by craftsmen. Four altar cloths that decorate the chancel depending on the liturgical season were made by Roman Candio . The Madonna comes from Werner A. Weber. Brother Klaus' meditation wheel is embedded in the floor in front of the altar .

The rotunda of the Church of Heilig Chrüz not only offers the faithful a feeling of security, but also spatially implements what the liturgy constitution of the Second Vatican Council called for: the community of believers and pastors. When the church was built, a raised chancel was deliberately omitted, the floor is the same throughout the church. The symbols circle and cross shape the design of the whole church: the rotunda with its center of meaning, the altar, and the skylight, which was designed in the form of a large square with an inscribed cross. The tabernacle, stations of the cross and the Passion Cross take up these design elements again.
