Kreuzbergkirche in Wiesau

The Kreuzbergkirche (also Filialkirche Heilig Kreuz) is a Roman Catholic church in Wiesau in the northern Upper Palatinate . The pilgrimage church is located on the 554 meter high Kreuzberg above the village next to the Wiesau cemetery.

history

The first mention of a previous building of today's Kreuzbergkirche goes back to the year 1508. At that time, a chapel to the Holy Cross was mentioned north of Wiesau, which decayed during the Reformation and was finally demolished. The stones of the chapel were used to build the parish church of St. Jakob in Mitterteich . In 1629 only the remains of the former chapel were left.

Reconstruction of the building began in 1657 and was completed in 1661; the construction was largely financed by donations. A tower was added to the chapel around ten years later in 1668 . In 1700 the church was significantly expanded before about half of the tower was demolished in 1770 and probably rebuilt in its current construction. Between 1734 and 1738 the two side chapels were added under the pastor Tröster. At the end of the 18th century, numerous repairs were carried out on the tower dome , roof and inside the church. From 1855 to 1868 the roof structure was renewed.

In 1920 and 1928 the roof structure was renovated again. In the 1990s the Kreuzbergkirche was renovated inside.

description

The wall pillar church has a recessed choir space under the church tower. The floor plan is based on the cross symbol. At the beginning of the nave, over whose central yoke there is a dome, there are chapels on both sides. The ceiling paintings showing Lucifer and the seven vices in person were created around 1740. The high altar and the side altars , which are consecrated to St. Joseph and St. Mary, were made by the Waldsassen sculptor Karl Stilp at the beginning of the 18th century.
