The Catholic Holy Cross Church

The Holy Cross Church is the Catholic church in Calvörde . It belongs to the parish of St. Christophorus in the Stendal deanery of the Magdeburg diocese .

prehistory

The first attempts at the Reformation began in Calvörde in 1542, but they were suppressed again in 1547 by Heinrich II . In 1568, Duke Julius finally introduced the Reformation. Since then, only a few residents in the market town of Calvörde have been Catholic. Around 1832 there were 10 Catholics out of 1874 inhabitants. Most of the time, they held their services at home.

The Second World War and the loss of German territory caused the population to rise rapidly. There were resettlers from Western Pomerania , East Brandenburg , Silesia , Posen , West Prussia and East Prussia . This increased the number of Catholics. They were given the opportunity to hold their service in the Protestant St. George Church . A prayer room was later set up in a private home. But the demand of the Catholics for their own house of God ultimately led to the construction of the new church.

Construction and consecration

The foundation stone was laid at the beginning of 1951, the inauguration took place on September 23, 1951. This church was named Holy Cross Church in Calvörde. The ordination was carried out by an apostolic administrator , representative of the bishop from the Archdiocese of Paderborn , to which Calvörde belonged at the time. Before the church was built, a stable that previously stood on this site was demolished.

The first pastor of the church was also the last so far. Aloys Körner, born in 1910, himself a displaced person , had been active in pastoral care in Calvörde since 1947. The priest , ordained in 1939 , was previously the parish administrator in Hammerstein ( Schlochau district ). Körner died on January 6, 1989 in Calvörde. There was a shortage of priests, so that several parishes joined forces. Since May 2, 2010, the Holy Cross Church has belonged to the parish of St. Christophorus, based in Haldensleben , and the Heilig Kreuz Curate in Calvörde was abolished. In addition to the Holy Cross Church, the parish also includes the churches " St. Johannes Baptist " in Althaldensleben , " St. Nikolaus von der Flüe " in Colbitz , " St. Benedikt " in Eichenbarleben , " St. Peter and Paul " in Groß Ammensleben , " St. Liborius " in Haldensleben, " St. Josef and St. Theresia of the Child Jesus " in Weferlingen , " St. Josef " in Wolmirstedt and the pilgrimage chapel "St. Anna “on Gut Glüsig .
