history

With the introduction of the Reformation in 1541, the population in Haldensleben became predominantly Evangelical-Lutheran .

After the number of Catholics in Neuhaldensleben had increased again in the course of industrialization, holy masses were held from 1905 to 1920 by priests from Althaldensleben in the hall of the “Hohenzollern” restaurant on the market in Neuhaldensleben. Before that, the Catholics from Neuhaldensleben went to church in the double church in Althaldensleben .

In 1920 the property at Magdeburger Strasse 28 or 32 was acquired, where the services took place until 1939. In 1926 the branch parish "Haldensleben I." was established, a chapel was set up on Magdeburger Strasse , and Neuhaldensleben received the first parish vicar in Theodor Schulte .

In 1937 the episcopal approval for the construction of the St. Liborius Church took place. In 1938, after the Mittelland Canal went into operation , Alt- and Neuhaldensleben were merged to form Haldensleben. Construction of the church began that year. At that time Wilhelm Reimetz was parish vicar in Haldensleben. On May 21, 1939, the church was consecrated by Augustinus Philipp Baumann , the auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Paderborn , to which Haldensleben belonged at the time. Liborius, the main patron of the Archdiocese of Paderborn, also became the patron saint of the new church in Haldensleben. In 1945 an organ intended for the church was delivered, but it was no longer installed.

After the Second World War, the number of Catholics in Haldensleben increased further due to the influx of Catholic refugees and displaced persons . In 1949 the parish of St. Liborius was established. During the term of office of Pastor Johannes Meier, which lasted from 1949 to 1965, the parsonage was built and the church was furnished with the Michael relief above the entrance portal, the Liborius portrait, the altarpiece, the organ and the Way of the Cross . In 1979 the rectory was inaugurated.

On March 1, 2007 the community association "Haldensleben - Eichenbarleben - Groß Ammensleben - Weferlingen - Wolmirstedt " was founded, to which the church belonged from then on. On May 2, 2010, today's parish “St. Christophorus ”. Architecture and equipment

There is a cross-crowned roof turret on the roof of the single-nave hall church . Above the entrance portal, a relief shows the Archangel Michael , the patron saint of Germany , with a sword and a dragon at his feet. The Latin inscription "QUIS UT DEUS" ("Who is like God") is the translation of the Hebrew name Michael (Hebrew: מיכאל).

In the entrance area of the church there is a Pietà and memorial plaques for the fallen and missing . The former priests of the parish are also remembered there. The interior is closed off by a wooden ceiling. The stained glass windows were designed by A. Reisdorff from Cologne and executed in 1938 by the Cologne-based glass painting company Botz + Miesen, they show the seven Catholic sacraments : Baptism , Confession , Eucharist , Confirmation , Marriage , Ordination and Anointing of the Sick . The church stalls offer 184 seats.

In addition to the altar, there is also a tabernacle stele from the 1960s and the baptismal font from the 1980s, decorated with ears of corn and grapes . The wooden ambo is decorated with a representation of the Holy Spirit . The mosaic on the back wall shows Jesus Christ and the four evangelist symbols : on his right the man for Matthew , below the lion for Mark , on his left the eagle for John and below the bull for Luke .

To the left of the chancel there is a statue of the Virgin Mary, created in 1941 by the sculptor Heinrich Pütz (1882–1962) from Wiedenbrück , in front of which sacrificial candles can be placed. Since 1963 there has been a 2.40 meter high depiction of Saint Liborius, designed by Werner Schubert-Deister , on one of the columns , including a peacock . According to legend , in the 9th century a peacock moved ahead with the transfer of the relics of St. Liborius from Le Mans , Liborius' place of work, to Paderborn , where they have been since then.

The organ, built in the middle of the 20th century, has 22 registers and the confessional is placed under the organ gallery. The Way of the Cross from the 1950s, designed as a mosaic, comprises 14 stations. The artist Erika Maria Wiegand , who lived in Haldensleben from 1945 to 1952, created the Pietà ( terracotta , 90 cm) in 1949 and the Christmas crib (also terracotta) in 1950 .
