The double church Althaldensleben - also called Schinkel Simultan Church - is the church in Althaldensleben , a district of Haldensleben , the district town of the Börde district in Saxony-Anhalt . It is located on the “Kirchgang” street and includes an Evangelical Lutheran and Roman Catholic church, which are connected by a bell tower that is used simultaneously.

History and architecture

The double church was built at the instigation of the entrepreneur and landowner Johann Gottlob Nathusius (1760–1835), who in 1810 had bought the buildings of the Althaldensleben monastery , which had been dissolved by the authorities of the Kingdom of Westphalia . The church was designed after 1825–1827 by construction manager Lietzmann and reworked from 1827–1829 by the senior construction deputation under the direction of Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The foundation stone was laid on June 23, 1828, and it has been used by the two parishes since 1830. A central entrance building with an octagonal, helmeted tower top is flanked by two church rooms - three-aisled halls with a barrel-vaulted central nave. The model was the church in the Althaldensleben monastery, where the divine services for the two denominations had been separated by a wall since the 17th century. Of the bells , the oldest (1621) still comes from the former monastery, three more steel bells were cast in 1921. Both churches were equipped with an organ from the Haldensleber organ building company, Shell.

On March 11th, 2008 the “Friends of Schinkel-Simultankirche Althaldensleben” was founded, it supports the preservation of the church. The most extensive renovation to date took place in the years 2009 to 2011, including the previously white exterior walls being painted in color. On May 29, 2011, the Evangelical Church was reopened by Bishop Ilse Junkermann from the Evangelical Church in Central Germany and the Catholic Church by Bishop Gerhard Feige from the Diocese of Magdeburg .

The 2011 census in the European Union showed that of the 18,527 inhabitants of the city of Haldensleben, 16.6% belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran Church and 3.6% to the Roman Catholic Church. The vast majority of Haldensleben's residents do not belong to any religious community today.

Protestant church

The Evangelical Luther Church is named after Martin Luther and has around 125 chairs. At the beginning of the 1970s, the sanctuary was given its present form, and in 2012 a simple cross was attached to the back wall of the sanctuary. The space under the organ gallery is separated from the church and is used for community events and as a winter church.

The parish belongs to the central region of the parish of Haldensleben-Wolmirstedt in the provost district of Stendal-Magdeburg of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany. In addition to the Luther Church, its parish area also includes the former monastery church in Hillersleben , the St. Andreas Church in Hundisburg , the church in Neuenhofe , the St. Johannes Church in Vahldorf and the Church of Our Lady in Wedringen .

Catholic Church

The Catholic Church “St. Johannes Baptist “has the patronage of John the Baptist . Their pews offer 78 seats. The interior also includes a roughly life-size statue of the church patron, John the Baptist, and a statue of the Virgin Mary, in front of which sacrificial candles can be placed. A small statue under the organ gallery represents St. Anne with her daughter Maria .

In 1968, its interior was redesigned after the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council . In the course of the most recent renovation in 2011, the altar area was redesigned by the Magdeburg artist Maren-Magdalena Sorger: the tabernacle , altar , ambo and the altarpiece were newly made, with the color blue symbolizing the water and the material glass symbolizing transcendence . In this context, the red glass of Eternal Light has now been replaced by a colorless variant. In 2011 the organ was restored by organ builder Hans-Jürgen Vogel from Thale and made playable again.

On March 1, 2007 the community association "Haldensleben - Eichenbarleben - Groß Ammensleben - Weferlingen - Wolmirstedt" was founded, to which the church belonged from then on. On May 2, 2010, today's parish “St. Christophorus ”, which belongs to the Stendal deanery of the Magdeburg diocese and has its seat at the double church. In addition to the church “St. Johannes Baptist "also the churches" Heilig Kreuz "in Calvörde ," St. Nikolaus von der Flüe "in Colbitz ," St. Benedikt "in Eichenbarleben ," St. Peter and Paul "in Groß Ammensleben ," St. Liborius "in Haldensleben , " St. Josef and St. Theresia of the Child Jesus " in Weferlingen , " St. Josef " in Wolmirstedt and the pilgrimage chapel "St. Anna “on Gut Glüsig .
