Master of the Neuwerk Madonna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a master of Neuwerk Madonna one is medieval sculptor called that around 1360 in Erfurt worked.

The artist , who is not known by name, is named after the sandstone figure of a Madonna that he created for a door pillar of the Neuwerkskirche in Erfurt. The 135 centimeter high figure can be found today in the Angermuseum in Erfurt. Furthermore, the master is said to have created the figure of St. Severus on a portal of the church. The master is influenced by the motifs and types of Rhenish sculpture of his time. According to some art historians, he was perhaps a student of the Erfurt master of the Severi sarcophagus or the sculptor Johann Gerhart , who made some sculptures in Erfurt's Severikirche . The master could also have immigrated from Marburg. The work of the master is an example of how the importance of Erfurt on the trade route from the Middle Rhine to Bohemia is expressed in art . Among other things, the city had received the trade fair privilege from the Emperor in 1331 and its location and wealth attracted important artists.
