Johann Gerhart

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Gerhart (* 14th century) was a Gothic stone sculptor who worked in Erfurt around the middle of the 14th century .

He created the figure of a Madonna on a corner pillar of the choir of the Serverikirche in Erfurt and on the base with the words Hat Job. Gehart gehowen signed; it is the only 14th century stone sculpture in Central Europe that has been signed by an artist. Jobann Gerhart made several other sculptures in the church. His work is an example of how art expresses the importance of Erfurt on the trade route from the Middle Rhine to Bohemia . Among other things, the city had received the trade fair privilege from the Emperor in 1331 and its location and wealth attracted important artists. Jobann Gerhart probably knew the Gothic style from the Bauhütten in Paris and Cologne and the sculptor was formative for the subsequent sculptures of the Middle Ages in Erfurt, which can be seen with the master of the Neuwerk Madonna , who was possibly a student of Gerhart.
