Friedrich Bergter

Friedrich Bergter (born September 2, 1924 in Leipzig , † March 2, 2010 in Jena ) was a German microbiologist . From 1984 to 1989 he was director of the Central Institute for Microbiology and Experimental Therapy (ZIMET) in Jena, a non-university research institute of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .

Life

Friedrich Bergter was born in Leipzig in 1924 and graduated from high school in his hometown. After the end of the Second World War , he initially worked as a new teacher. In 1946 he began to study biology at the University of Leipzig , where he also taught biology at the workers and farmers faculty . He received his doctorate in 1952 from the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena with a thesis on the inhibition of bacteria in bacteria-mold mixed cultures and four years later went to the Institute for Microbiology and Experimental Therapy founded by Hans Knöll in Jena , which later became the Central Institute for Microbiology and experimental therapy (ZIMET).

From 1970 he was head of the biophysics department at ZIMET. He was in the two-year German Academy of Sciences at Berlin with a thesis on the growth of microorganisms habilitation . In 1976 he was appointed professor and head of the microbial genetics and bioregulation department at ZIMET, and four years later he became head of the biotechnology department. In addition, he worked from 1966 to 1976 as a lecturer at the University of Jena. From February 1985 to September 1989 he succeeded Udo Taubeneck as director of the institute, followed by Michael Oettel .

In 1984 Friedrich Bergter received the GDR National Prize, 1st class for science and technology, for developing the antibiotic nourseothricin as a feed additive for animal production . He died in Jena in 2010.
