Udo Taubeneck

Udo Taubeneck (born  May 12, 1928 in Jena ; † January 19, 2015 in Rudolstadt ) was a German microbiologist . From 1976 to 1984 he headed the Central Institute for Microbiology and Experimental Therapy of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and from 1976 to 1986 the group of biology in the Research Council of the GDR . In addition, from 1968 he was Professor of Microbiology at the University of Jena .

Life

Udo Taubeneck was born in Jena in 1928 as the son of a galvanizer and graduated from high school in 1946 . He then became an apprentice at Zeiss and then an assistant laboratory assistant at the Institute for Microbiology (Schott Zeiss Institute) in Jena. From 1946 to 1950 he studied biology and chemistry at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . As a qualified biologist, he was a research assistant at VEB Jenapharm from 1951 to 1952 . He received his doctorate in 1952 from the University of Jena, where he also received his habilitation nine years later . In 1952/53 he was an assistant at the University's Institute for General Botany.

From 1953 he worked as an assistant, from 1957 as a department head and from 1968 as a division manager at the Jena Institute for Microbiology and Experimental Therapy of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , which from 1970 was called the Central Institute for Microbiology and Experimental Therapy (ZIMET) and one of the largest bioscientific research institutions counted in the German Democratic Republic . In addition, he became a lecturer in 1965 and professor for microbiology at the University of Jena in 1968. From 1976 to 1984 he headed ZIMET, succeeding Hans Knöll . In addition, he was a member of the Research Council of the GDR from 1969 to 1986 , in which he headed the biology group from 1976. Friedrich Bergter was his successor as director of ZIMET .

Udo Taubeneck died in Rudolstadt in 2015 .

Awards

Udo Taubeneck was from 1974 a corresponding and from 1977 a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR, in 1974 he was also admitted to the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina . In 1987 he received the GDR National Prize .
