In Germany, electroplater is a training profession in accordance with the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) and the Crafts Code (HwO). It is offered without further specialization according to subject or focus in industry and craft . The apprenticeship takes 3 years.

In Switzerland , the term electroplater is common.

Job content

Electroplaters (new job title for surface coaters since August 2005) are skilled workers in the trade or industry. They are able to apply metals to conductive and non-conductive base materials in mostly aqueous solutions of salts. These metal layers are intended to impart certain properties to the materials that the substrate material itself cannot achieve. These are improvements in properties in terms of its appearance, its mechanics, its corrosion resistance and its shape.

The electroplating companies are able to change the composition of electrolytes in such a way that certain properties of metals are preferentially developed and the properties of the coating metal thus created benefit the basic raw material. A well-known example of this is the hardness and scratch resistance of chrome on relatively soft and sensitive plastics.

Depositors coat with the aid of electroplating metal - plastic - and other material surfaces to improve their properties. They prepare electroplating baths, check their functionality and composition and operate the special electroplating plants in which they metallize the materials to be coated in a large number of cleaning, coating and post-treatment baths ( electroplating ).

Electroplating often also includes very good mechanical pre-processing of the components to be coated. That is why the master of this trade in Germany describes himself as a master in the electroplating and metal grinding trade or, from January 1, 2015, simply as a master in the electroplating trade .

Training in Switzerland

Surface practitioner EBA

The training to become a surface practitioner takes two years.

There are three disciplines:

Surface coater EFZ

The training lasts three years. The school is usually attended in the form of block lessons. A vocational school block often lasts 6–8 weeks. If you perform very well, you can take the vocational school-leaving certificate at the same time.

If you pass the final examination you will receive the federal certificate of proficiency as a surface coater.

Previous professions

Electroplater

The electroplater was the predecessor of the EFZ surface coater and lasted four years of apprenticeship. Transitional provisions apply until December 31, 2015.

Hot dip galvanizer

The predecessor of the surface practitioner EBA was the three-year apprenticeship as a hot-dip galvanizer.
